About The Position

Fleet Vehicle Technician III is a key member of our maintenance team, responsible for the comprehensive upkeep and repair of a diverse fleet of diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment. This role integrates the specialized skills of diesel engines, heavy equipment, marine, and small engines, ensuring the operational efficiency, safety, and reliability of public safety, public service vehicles, construction equipment, and aquatic vessels. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of mechanical systems, a commitment to quality workmanship, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical degree in automotive or diesel mechanics preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience as a diesel mechanic, heavy equipment mechanic, marine mechanic, or small engine mechanic.
  • Must possess Master ASE Technician certification or recertify within 6 months in one of the following: Automobile & Light Truck Certification Tests (A Series) Medium-Heavy Truck Certification Tests (T Series) ASE Military Tactical Wheeled Vehicle Certification Tests (MIL Series).
  • Or possess either: Ambulance Technician Level 1 certification or L-1 Law Enforcement Vehicle Installation Technician certification.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and mechanical repair techniques.
  • Proficient in the use of diagnostic tools, hand tools, and heavy machinery, with a solid understanding of safety protocols and regulations.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with keen attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Valid driver’s license and relevant certifications preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on diesel engines (oil changes, filter replacements, system inspections).
  • Conduct diagnostics to identify issues and repair methods for diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment (trucks, buses, generators, public safety and public services ).
  • Utilize hydraulic jacks and lifts for safe vehicle maintenance and repairs.
  • Test-drive vehicles post-repair to validate functionality and document findings.
  • Maintain records of repairs, maintenance schedules, and parts inventory.
  • Disassemble, inspect, and reassemble heavy machinery components for efficiency and safety.
  • Interpret technical drawings and manuals to troubleshoot mechanical issues.
  • Travel to job sites for on-site repairs and maintenance on large machinery.
  • Collaborate with project managers to schedule maintenance and minimize downtime.
  • Assess and repair boat engines and systems (inboard/outboard motors and diesel ship engines).
  • Execute repairs or replacements for critical boat components (sails, propellers, steering systems).
  • Upgrade navigational systems and electrical components for aquatic vehicles.
  • Perform routine maintenance on small engines (motorcycles, lawn mowers, outdoor power tools).
  • Use diagnostic systems to identify mechanical failures and develop solutions.
  • Communicate technical findings and recommendations to clients clearly and effectively.
  • Implement and enforce safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Conduct inspections of tools, equipment, and workspaces for cleanliness and safety.
  • Document and report safety incidents, ensuring timely communication and corrective actions.
