About The Position

This position performs skilled work maintaining and repairing town vehicles including department and pool vehicles, public safety vehicles, and light and heavy equipment. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Fleet Superintendent.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment
  • Thorough knowledge of necessary safety precautions
  • Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work
  • Basic skill with computers
  • Ability to learn to use computer-based work-order system
  • Ability to detect, by inspection, worn or broken parts
  • Ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to prepare reports
  • Ability to adapt available tools and parts to specific repair problems
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates
  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least 2 years of experience in automotive or equipment repair experience
  • Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina
  • May require possession of a commercial driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina (Class B)

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, maintains, services, and repairs automotive and various equipment; troubleshoots problems; maintains records and files.
  • Repairs engines, hydraulic pumps, hoses, rams, valve bodies and controls, brake systems.
  • Checks and replaces oil and fluid levels and filters; checks cooling system, belts, hoses, fans, exhaust system, etc.
  • Checks, maintains, repairs, and/or replaces various automotive/equipment systems including wheel bearings, shock absorbers, fan belts, radiator hoses, u-joints, fluids, oil and lubricants, air pressure, coolant, exhaust system, ignitions, transmissions, differentials, and/or hydraulics.
  • Changes, repairs and replaces tires, brakes; rotates and balances tires.
  • Tunes motors using standard testing equipment; replaces fuel and water pumps.
  • Reviews electrical work on equipment, such as diagnosing electrical shorts, installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights, and repairing generators and starters.
  • Installs radios, sirens, light bars, cages, roll bars and other equipment.
  • May fabricate and/or modify parts and equipment and/or adapt or fabricate tools and parts to repair equipment and vehicles.
  • Performs occasional metal work including cutting, welding, etc.
  • Safely operates heavy construction and repair equipment.
  • Interprets and works from sketches and/or diagrams.
  • Recognize and safely manage hazards encountered in the course of work.
  • Assists and participates in receiving, counting, and tracking inventory.
  • Records completed work in electronic work order reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
