About The Position

First Student is hiring immediately for a Mechanic / Maintenance Technician II to join their team. This role is critical in keeping the fleet road-ready and dependable, supporting a safer ride for the children in the community. As a Technician, your day-to-day work ensures vehicles are maintained and safe for passengers. You will complete routine and advanced repairs, handle emergency service calls, and work under moderate supervision. You may also provide mentorship to entry-level technicians.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience working with diesel, gas, electric, or CNG vehicles
  • Comfortable using hand tools and diagnostics software
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work both independently and on a team
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Willingness to obtain a CDL (training provided)
  • Have or willing to build a personal mechanic tool set
  • Eager to grow skills through ASE testing

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Vocational or technical training in vehicle repair
  • Class B CDL with passenger endorsement (or ability to obtain within 3 months)
  • ASE Certifications (with requirement to begin ASE testing within 1 year)
  • Experience performing DOT inspections and vehicle safety assessments
  • Military experience
  • Prior fleet maintenance experience
  • Previous bus/large vehicle repair experience

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on vehicles including: Brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, and transmissions, Electrical components, fluid systems, filters, belts, batteries, and hoses
  • Conduct preventive maintenance (PMs), DOT inspections, and diagnostic troubleshooting
  • Maintain detailed service records, complete accurate work orders, and track parts usage
  • Support emergency roadside service calls when needed
  • Clean vehicles and maintain the shop environment
  • Safely move vehicles around the yard or between work areas
  • Repair and maintain shop tools and equipment
  • Other duties as assigned by management
