About The Position

The purpose of these positions is to diagnose, repair and perform routine maintenance on various types of vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to police vehicles, solid waste services vehicles, street maintenance vehicles, landscape maintenance equipment, heavy construction equipment and fire apparatus. Work will also include entering work order information into the fleet management software, reviewing, and verifying repairs and billing information; maintaining service documentation, reports and records; and/or providing customer service and responding to inquiries and requests.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • A minimum 1 year of automotive shop experience required.
  • A minimum of 60 hours of formal classroom training in automotive mechanics or a related trade or ASE certification in at least one specialty, or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire required.
  • A valid NC driver’s license and the availability of private transportation or the ability to provide transportation between job sites is required.
  • Possession of a commercial driver’s license Class B (CDL) issued by the State of North Carolina is required within one year of hire.
  • Knowledge of fleet technician methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair of automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of operating principles and mechanical repair of engines.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to provide attention to detail in assignments.
  • Ability to comprehend reference books and manuals.
  • Ability to be on rotation for after work hours for emergencies related to vehicles and be on call for inclement weather events as well as special events.
  • Ability to operate assigned tools and equipment.
  • Ability to organize and maintain records and files.
  • Ability to use web-based software systems.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office tools relevant to the position.
  • Ability to solve problems and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and customers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Complete diagnostics and service equipment at the appropriate level for the position by performing repairs, routine and preventative maintenance.
  • Change fluids, filters, batteries, tires, belts, blades, cables, lines and other components.
  • Replace and repair engines, transmissions, and other components.
  • Complete fire truck pump and aerial equipment diagnostics, repair and maintenance.
  • Maintain records of repairs by entering information into a fleet management work order software.
  • Use computer software, handheld devices, manuals, schematics, and other resources.
  • Be on rotation for after work hours for emergencies related to vehicles and be on call for inclement weather events as well as special events.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
