About The Position

This class is responsible for supervising, coordinating, and prioritizing the light or heavy-duty shop activities of the fleet maintenance operations for over 600 vehicles and equipment valued in excess of $25 million dollars in support of the Public Works Commission. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, supervising employees engaged in the repair/restoration/maintenance of vehicles/equipment; reviewing work in progress; inspecting completed work to include select quality control inspections; scheduling repairs/maintenance of all assigned vehicles/equipment; advising management about replacement versus repair of vehicles/equipment; maintaining/updating logs/records/files and operating/driving vehicles in performing work assignments/responsibilities. Ensures all applicable Federal, State, Environmental and Local Shop standards are enforced. Operating under general supervision of the Fleet Manager, latitude is allowed for independent judgement in carrying out the details of the work. Extended hours and on-call availability may be required. Performs related work as required.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of safety rules/regulations/procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of methods/practices/techniques involved in the repair/maintenance of a variety of motor vehicles/equipment including gasoline/diesel engines.
  • Good knowledge of supervisory concepts and practices.
  • Good knowledge of the receipt/storage/issuance of materials/parts/supplies, and record keeping requirements.
  • Skill in performing accurate mathematical computations.
  • Skill in using a computer and applicable software.
  • Ability to establish/prepare/maintain accurately detailed records and reports.
  • Ability to plan/train/evaluate/motivate work performance.
  • Ability to supervise people and multiple projects.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with customers, all levels of employees, vendors, and contractors.
  • Graduation from a two year accredited university/college or technical school with a degree/certification in automotive/mechanical technology, or related field and a minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance/repair of gasoline/diesel vehicles/equipment which includes supervisory or lead worker responsibilities, in a large automotive repair facility.
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and a minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance/repair of gasoline/diesel vehicles/equipment which includes supervisory or lead worker responsibilities, in a large automotive repair facility.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Driver’s license.
