About The Position

This recruitment series is to fill two open positions within the Fleet Services team in the Public Works Department. An employee in this class is responsible for the scheduling and completion of maintenance and repair of all City vehicles and equipment. Work is under the general supervision of the Fleet Services Division Manager who primarily reviews work through results obtained. The position requires the use of City vehicles and the ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license and CDL license within specified timeframes. The City of Redmond will support the necessary training and education to achieve these licenses. Employees must maintain a safe driving record. The work environment involves frequent work near moving mechanical parts or in outside weather conditions, with occasional exposure to wet/humid conditions, fumes, or toxic/caustic chemicals. Noise levels can be moderate to loud, and employees may participate in the City of Redmond Hearing Conservation Program. Employees may be required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • Fleet Technician I: Minimum of one (1) year of experience in engine and power train repair, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Fleet Technician II: Minimum of three (3) years of experience in engine and power train repair or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Fleet Technician III: Associate’s Degree in Automotive Technology or a related field, or a certificate from a post-secondary vocational school; plus, a minimum of five (5) years of experience in engine and power train repair; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics, gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, generators, and powertrains.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to complete assigned projects.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors, and the public.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Oregon driver’s license within thirty (30) days from date of hire.
  • Possession of or must obtain within six (6) months from date of hire, a valid Oregon CDL license of the required classification to operate Public Works Department vehicles and equipment.
  • Must have and maintain a safe driving record.

  • Fleet Technician II Desirable: Five (5) years of experience in engine and power train repair, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • An Associate’s Degree in Automotive Technology or a related field, or a certificate from a post-secondary vocational school.
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR.
  • Possess relevant certifications for the repair and maintenance of gas and diesel engines, and basic certifications for Fire and Medic apparatus.
  • Have a solid understanding of the hazards and safety precautions associated with municipal maintenance and repair activities, with a reliable record of following safety protocols.
  • Demonstrate practical knowledge of modern equipment maintenance practices, methods, materials, and tools, with hands-on experience in applying these techniques to various types of equipment.
  • Capable of performing basic arc welding tasks on heavy and light steel, with the ability to produce satisfactory welds.
  • Hold, or be able to obtain, ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) and EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) certifications.
  • HVAC experience and/or an EPA Section 609 Technician Certification.
  • Fleet Technician III Desirable: A minimum of eight (8) years of advanced experience in engine and powertrain repair, or an equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating exceptional ability in performing complex repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR.
  • Possess relevant certifications for the repair and maintenance of gas and diesel engines, as well as specialized certifications for Fire and Medic apparatus.
  • Thorough understanding of the hazards and safety precautions associated with municipal maintenance and repair activities, with a proven track record of adhering to safety protocols.
  • In-depth knowledge of modern equipment maintenance practices, methods, materials, and tools, with extensive experience in applying these techniques to various types of equipment.
  • Expertise in performing arc welding on both heavy and light steel, with a demonstrated ability to produce high-quality welds.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) and EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) certifications, underscoring a commitment to maintaining high industry standards.
  • MVAC experience and or an EPA Section 609 Technician Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine tests, services, and repairs on vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  • Carries out, and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors.
  • Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and hand, electric, and air driven tools.
  • Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work, with supervision.
  • Follows approved shop procedures.
  • Purchases parts and supplies as needed.
  • Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as necessary.
  • Maintains records and utilizes software for Fleet Operations and other specialized maintenance records.
  • Regularly operates a motor vehicle to attend to vehicle maintenance-related issues and inspections at various City locations.
  • Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment required to perform duties, including but not limited to automobiles, backhoes, pickup/utility trucks, 12-yard dump trucks, sweepers, chain/trimming saws, snowplows/blowers, miscellaneous power and hand tools, graders, weed eaters, lawn edgers, loaders, riding and manual lawn mowers, large rotary mowers, and farm tractors.
  • Supports the operation and utilization of Asset Management for planning, scheduling, and documenting work activities with respect to priorities identified by the Asset Management Plan.
  • Assists with asset management plan development, supporting the identification of asset inventory and condition, calculating business risk evaluations, determining asset net present value and life cycle costs, and developing alternatives for cost-effective operation and maintenance and long-term investment.
  • Supports condition assessment of existing assets to improve and enhance fleet planning and budgeting.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
