Fleet Services Master Technician
About The Position
The Town of Apex is seeking a highly experienced and technically advanced Fleet Services Master Technician to serve as a subject matter expert for vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair. This role involves performing complex diagnostics, advanced troubleshooting, and high-level repairs on a diverse municipal fleet, including light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles and specialized equipment. In addition to hands-on repair work, the Master Technician will provide technical guidance, mentoring, and on-the-job training to less experienced technicians, assist with difficult repair issues, and support Fleet leadership in promoting best practices and quality control. Employees may be subject to on-call or callback during emergency situations or inclement weather. Work requires a high degree of independent judgment, technical expertise, and problem-solving ability.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Considerable experience in fleet, automotive, or heavy equipment maintenance and repair, including advanced diagnostic and troubleshooting responsibilities.
- 8 years of related job experience
- North Carolina State Inspection License or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
- EPA 609 refrigerant Certification
- Forklift Certification
- North Carolina Class A CDL or ability obtain within 12 months of hire
- EVT fire apparatus Certifications: F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6
- LEV Certification – L1
- ASE Certified Master Technician T1-T8 or A1-A9 (each ASE certification may be substituted with 20 hours of in class manufacturer specific training)

Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical subject matter expert for fleet maintenance and repair operations, providing advanced diagnostics and resolution of complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic system issues.
- Perform advanced troubleshooting and repair work on gasoline, diesel, electric, and alternative-fuel vehicles and equipment, including difficult or non-routine failures.
- Assist, mentor, and provide technical guidance to technicians on complex repairs, diagnostic strategies, proper procedures, and safe work practices.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Diagnose and resolve complex electrical and electronic system issues.
- Repair and maintain engines, hydraulic systems, and related vehicle systems.
- Test drive vehicles and equipment before and after repairs to diagnose concerns, verify corrective actions, and ensure proper operation.
- Respond to road service calls and perform on-site repairs when feasible.
- Conduct North Carolina vehicle safety and emissions inspections.
- Review work orders for accuracy and completeness; document diagnostics, labor, parts, and corrective actions in the fleet maintenance management system.
- Assist Fleet leadership with quality control efforts.
- Identify required parts and materials; verify warranty eligibility; and assist in utilizing warranty coverage to control maintenance costs.
- Operate and instruct others in the safe and effective use of shop tools and equipment.
- Repair and maintain emergency, seasonal, and specialty equipment.
- Communicate effectively with Fleet staff and supported departments regarding repair status, technical issues, and operational impacts.
- Ensure compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Participate in and support ongoing training and continuing education.
