About The Position

The Fleet Services Technician Apprentice program is a formal 3-year program consisting of six steps of 6 months each, while progressively introducing the apprentice to increasingly complex repairs. The apprenticeship in total requires 6,000 hours of on-the-job training (OJT). The apprenticeship also requires a minimum of 144 hours of classroom instruction (RSI) per year. This is a Bargaining Unit position. The Fleet Services Apprentice will have a keen interest in acquiring the ability to repair and maintain all Grant PUD utility equipment while on Grant PUD property and in the field, under the direction and supervision of a Fleet Services Foreman or a Journeyman Technician. The Apprentice, while following all safety protocols, must demonstrate the ability to follow directions, work both independently and supervised, be self-motivated and exercise sound judgement. The Fleet Services Apprentice will perform tasks under the direct supervision of and with assistance from a Journeyman Technician or Foreman. The Fleet Services Apprentice must demonstrate an aptitude for the skills necessary to perform the duties of a Fleet Services Journeyman Technician. The Fleet Services Apprentice will diligently follow all safety regulations and Grant PUD policies. The Fleet Services Apprentice will demonstrate the ability and willingness to work at various locations within the Grant PUD and the ability to safely work during inclement weather. The Fleet Services Apprentice will be available to respond to 24-hour callouts accompanied by a journeyman for training purposes. The Fleet Services Apprentice is required to conduct themselves in a professional, safe, and courteous manner at all times. The Apprentice will maintain a positive attitude towards learning. The purpose of the Fleet Services Apprenticeship program is to help eligible employees progress to Journeyman Technician status, if they have the desire, motivation, skills, aptitude, and determination to be successful as a Fleet Services Journeyman Technician.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
• Will complete all coursework designed as part of the Fleet Services Technician Apprentice program including a minimum of 144 hours of classroom (RSI) instruction per year over the 3 year, 6000 hour duration of the apprenticeship.
• Valid State of Washington Driver's License.
• Must have current, OR be able to obtain during the apprenticeship, Washington State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Class A endorsement.
• Acquire a valid first aid card including CPR training, equivalent to the State of Washington requirements for first aid within 1 year of starting the apprenticeship.
• Eligibility for this classification requires the applicant/employee to meet the State of Washington and the Utility’s Joint Apprenticeship Standards.
• Will complete the required hours of on-the-job training (OJI) consistent with the program.
• Knowledge and understanding of Grant PUD and Washington State workers rules and regulations.
• Knowledge and understanding of Grant PUD Policy and Procedures for employees.
• Knowledge and understanding of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
• Knowledge and understanding of the Commitment to the Code of Excellence.
• General knowledge of the Grant PUD’s Strategic Plan.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and cooperate with all levels of Grant PUD personnel, contractors, and customers.
• Demonstrated ability to follow and understand oral and written instructions.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and supervised and be self-motivated.
• Demonstrated ability to problem solve.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgement, especially in stressful or crisis situations.
• Write legibly and be able to maintain records, files, and fill out forms.
• Must be mentally and physically fit for duty.
• Duties require the physical dexterity, strength, and balance to work safely in all aspects of fleet repair and maintenance activities including truck mounted electric utility specialty equipment.
• Must possess good visual perception and color comprehension.
• Must be able to work in field environments with varying weather conditions.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

• Background in automotive/diesel/agricultural mechanics preferred, or combination of experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform tasks under the direct supervision of and with assistance from a Journeyman Technician or Foreman.
• Diligently follow all safety regulations and Grant PUD policies.
• Demonstrate the ability and willingness to work at various locations within the Grant PUD and the ability to safely work during inclement weather.
• Be available to respond to 24-hour callouts accompanied by a journeyman for training purposes.
• Conduct themselves in a professional, safe, and courteous manner at all times.

• Work under the direct supervision of a Fleet Services Foreman or any other Journeyman, as assigned, such duties of a Journeyman as the extent of their training, experience, and knowledge will permit.
• Successfully complete all skilled occupational objectives/steps as outlined in the Fleet Services Technician Apprentice Guidelines document.
• Become qualified to safely and competently operate tools and equipment associated with the Fleet Services Department functions.
• Gain a basic knowledge of Fleet Services inherent to the Electrical Utility industry to include, but not limited to: Grant PUD /shop familiarization & safety programs, Light duty vehicle & trailer maintenance & repair, Heavy duty vehicle & trailer maintenance & repair (DOT), Industrial equipment maintenance & repair, Aerial equipment maintenance & repair, Chassis (drivetrain & suspension, brakes) diagnostic & repair, Powertrain (LD & HD gas, diesel, hybrid, & electric engines) diagnostic & repair, Electrical (12 volt, 24 volt, & high voltage) diagnostics, testing, & repair, Fabrication (arc/mig welding, air arc, plasma & oxy/acetylene torch cutting), Mobile field work.
• Actively participate in all aspects of Grant PUD's safety program, including, but not limited to: Following all safety policies and procedures. Show an aptitude and awareness of what a safe work environment is for all employees. Alerting Supervisors and coworkers to unsafe or hazardous working conditions. Reporting any safety incidents or close calls within 24 hours. Accepting feedback from Manager and coworkers regarding employee's safety performance.
• Demonstrate positive support for and implementation of utility decisions.
• Actively promote adherence to and enforce Grant PUD policies and procedures.
• Responsible for personal development by participation in training and coaching opportunities, with the demonstration of good work performance and behaviors.
