About The Position

Fleet Service Workers perform routine preventative maintenance and general repair on City-owned vehicles and equipment, including automobiles, hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs), construction equipment, emergency response vehicles, medium/heavy-duty trucks, and small specialized equipment. This classification also performs comprehensive tire service work, including inspection, repair, replacement, and balancing of light, medium, and heavy-duty tires. Fleet Service Workers may assist with complex repairs under the direction of senior staff. This is an entry-level classification distinguished by limited experience working on complex systems found in modern fleet vehicles, including electronic control systems, high-voltage hybrid/EV systems, advanced diagnostics, and heavy-duty tire service procedures. This Limited Duration position could last up to 24 months per business need. Limited Duration employees are at-will and do not have a probationary period; they accrue no seniority, have no bumping or layoff provisions, and have no discipline or discharge rights.

Requirements

  • Methods of repair and maintenance for modern automotive, heavy-duty, hybrid, and electric vehicles.
  • Tire construction, load ratings, repair standards, and balancing procedures for light, medium, and heavy-duty tires.
  • Basic computer skills, including use of fleet management systems and diagnostic software.
  • Shop safety practices, including proper use of tire service equipment and introductory awareness of high-voltage EV safety protocols.
  • Enter and retrieve data using fleet management software.
  • Diagnose basic mechanical, electrical, and tire-related issues on modern fleet vehicles.
  • Follow repair procedures and meet established time and quality standards.
  • Prioritize work, interpret service requests, and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Work collaboratively with coworkers and customers.
  • Follow shop safety rules, including EV/hybrid safety precautions and tire service safety procedures.
  • Operate diagnostic tools, scan tools, tire machines, balancing equipment, and related shop equipment.
  • Research standard repair times and service procedures using electronic service information systems.
  • Perform mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and tire service repairs as experience grows.
  • Use diagnostic tools to perform basic system scans, read fault codes, and support senior technicians during more advanced diagnostics.
  • Meet or exceed repair and service time standards consistent with industry expectations.
  • One year of experience in preventative maintenance or repair of automotive, medium/heavy-duty, hybrid, or electric vehicles and equipment; experience with tire service on light, medium, or heavy-duty vehicles is desirable.
  • Two years of specialized training in automotive and/or heavy equipment repair from an accredited trade school or college. Training involving hybrid or electric vehicle fundamentals preferred.
  • A valid Oregon Class A driver’s license [or, the ability to obtain within 12 months]; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City’s standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).
  • At least one ASE certification within 12 months.
  • Must pass police background check, physical assessment, and drug test.

  • EV/Hybrid Safety Level 1 or equivalent industry training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general repair and service on heavy, medium, and light-duty vehicles and equipment, including gasoline, diesel, hybrid, alternative-fuel, and fully electric powertrains.
  • Reviews service requests, documents completed work in electronic fleet management systems, and updates maintenance records.
  • Performs basic and routine services such as oil and filter changes, fluid service, battery service (including 12-volt hybrid/EV systems), tire replacement and balancing, light mechanical adjustments, and shop support duties.
  • Performs tire service on light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, including: – Tire inspection for wear, damage, alignment-related issues, and leaks – Removal, installation, repair, and replacement of tires and tire assemblies – Balancing of tires using electronic balancing equipment – Repair of tubeless and tube-type tires in accordance with industry standards – Identification of tire-related safety issues and reporting of major defects to senior staff
  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance inspections on modern vehicles and equipment, including inspection of: – Brakes (including ABS) – Engines (gas, diesel, hybrid engines, and basic EV components) – Transmissions, axles, driveline systems – Hydraulics and electronic controls – Cooling systems, HVAC, and battery thermal management – Electrical, lighting, and accessory systems – Tire and wheel assemblies, valve stems, and TPMS-related components
  • Performs minor electrical diagnosis and repairs, including basic work related to CAN networks, wiring, sensors, and auxiliary EV/hybrid systems.
  • Identifies issues requiring advanced diagnostics or high-voltage system work and reports these to the Lead Fleet Service Technician or senior staff.
  • Supports maintenance of light EV-specific components such as cabin air filters, coolant loops, low-voltage wiring, and electronic accessories (non-high voltage).
  • Operates tire machines, heavy-duty tire tools, wheel balancers, lifts, jacks, hand tools, air tools, diagnostic scan tools, and safety equipment.
  • Picks up parts, transports vehicles, performs off-site fuel deliveries, washes vehicles, and performs related support duties.
  • Assists with inventory, oil sampling, seasonal service programs, and general shop facility upkeep.
  • Supports and respects diversity and teamwork in the workplace.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
