Fleet Operations Specialist, Energy Storage

Verse•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Verse is hiring a technically curious Fleet Operations Specialist to support its growing fleet of IoT-connected battery energy storage systems operating under demanding availability service-level agreements. Working West Coast hours from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM PT, this person will serve as the daytime and evening first line of defense for fleet operations and customer support. The role is the first hire in this function and will work alongside another technical subject matter expert, partnering with engineering, data science, product, BizOps, and the customer’s NOC team. The start date will align with the initial waves of a battery energy storage system fleet migration to Verse’s battery management platform. The position combines NOC monitoring with site commissioning and technical troubleshooting. The specialist monitors fleet dashboards, site health, uptime, connectivity, and system telemetry; onboards and validates new sites; triages incidents; follows structured troubleshooting procedures; resolves issues within scope; and escalates others with complete handoff information. The specialist also supports customer communications, documents operational knowledge, improves playbooks, and helps identify opportunities for observability tooling, automation, and AI-assisted workflows. After training, the role joins an on-call rotation for critical incidents.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of experience in a technical support, NOC, field service, or IT operations role.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to represent Verse to enterprise customers during incidents.
  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals, including IP addressing, VPNs or tunneling, connectivity diagnostics such as ping, traceroute, and port checks, and common failure patterns.
  • Ability to read and interpret software logs, system status outputs, and basic telemetry data to form a diagnostic hypothesis.
  • Strong organization and a process-oriented approach, including following and documenting checklists and improving them when needed.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound judgment calls in a fast-moving environment, including deciding whether and when to escalate during incident windows.
  • Genuine interest in energy and battery storage, and willingness to learn how battery dispatch, tariffs, and grid programs affect system behavior.
  • Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation for critical incidents, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior energy industry experience.
  • Experience in a NOC, data center operations, or infrastructure monitoring role.
  • Familiarity with IoT systems, SCADA, or industrial control software.
  • Exposure to energy storage, solar, or grid-connected hardware systems.
  • Experience with site commissioning, field deployment, or system cutovers and migrations.
  • Scripting experience with Python, Bash, or SQL to automate routine checks.
  • Experience building knowledge bases or using AI tools to streamline support workflows; familiarity with Knowledge-Centered Service is a plus.
  • Coursework or certification in networking, systems administration, or IT.
  • Experience supporting or interfacing with software engineering teams on bug reproduction and escalation.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor real-time health, uptime, connectivity, and telemetry across Verse’s battery fleet.
  • Track per-site and fleet-wide availability against SLA targets and help build SLA dashboards and KPI trackers.
  • Log anomalies and tune alert logic and thresholds to reduce noise and improve detection.
  • Onboard new sites to the platform, including site details, tariffs, program enrollments, and meter and asset topology.
  • Validate site configurations and automated checks during software cutovers.
  • Coordinate sign-off and manual testing with the customer’s NOC before automated optimization goes live.
  • Capture lessons learned from migration batches and use them to streamline the commissioning process.
  • Serve as the first point of contact during the specified support window; triage Sev 1–4 issues in Linear and meet response SLAs, including 30-minute response for Sev 1 incidents.
  • Provide structured hourly updates on critical incidents and, once trained, join the after-hours on-call rotation as the first page for Sev 1 incidents.
  • Remotely access site controllers and troubleshoot versions, connectivity, logs, configurations, and autonomous operation using a structured playbook.
  • Distinguish hardware, software, and optimization issues using networking and energy-domain judgment; resolve issues within scope.
  • Escalate issues to Engineering and Data Science with a complete handoff package, involve Energy Storage SMEs and Product as needed, and follow up on OEM and vendor tickets.
  • Maintain runbooks, SOPs, response templates, and handoff templates.
  • Build a knowledge base from resolved tickets to support repeatable solutions and future automation.
  • Support root cause analyses and the monthly performance report with BizOps, flag Risk Register patterns, and identify recurring tasks for scripting or automation.
  • Help develop observability tooling, automated remediation scripts, and AI-assisted workflows.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and equity grant at a high-growth startup.
  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, and 401k.
  • Flexible hours.
  • Fully remote position.
  • Unlimited PTO.
  • Diverse and inclusive working environment.
