About The Position

The Fleet Operations Manager oversees UniGroup's contract truckman/truckload (CT/TL) fleet, ensuring loads are planned, assigned, and executed efficiently while maximizing fleet utilization and service performance. This role combines transportation planning, fleet coordination, relationship management, and operational problem-solving to keep freight moving safely, efficiently, and on schedule. In this position, you'll work closely with independent contractors, agents, dispatchers, van operators, payroll, and internal business partners to coordinate equipment, assign loads, support drivers, and resolve operational challenges. Success requires strong decision-making, effective communication, sound operational judgment, and the ability to balance customer service with transportation efficiency. This role offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on fleet performance while supporting one of the nation's largest transportation and relocation networks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 3–5 years of experience in transportation, logistics, fleet operations, dispatch, or a related field
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced operational environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications

Responsibilities

  • Plan, assign, and execute transportation orders to maximize fleet capacity, equipment utilization, and customer satisfaction
  • Coordinate with agents and van operators to optimize load planning, routing, and equipment availability
  • Monitor fleet utilization, line haul opportunities, and operational performance to maximize revenue and service levels
  • Communicate with agents regarding order assignments, schedule changes, and specialized transportation requirements
  • Monitor key fleet performance metrics, including utilization, on-time pickup and delivery, and freight mix while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Ensure independent contractors are compensated accurately and on time, including hauling pay, stop pay, and applicable reimbursements
  • Review weekly driver statements and partner with Payroll to resolve payment questions or discrepancies
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the contract driver fleet, providing operational support and coordinating with internal departments
  • Assist with recruiting, onboarding, orientation, and qualification of independent contractors and their equipment
  • Troubleshoot operational issues involving drivers, equipment, and shipments while collaborating with dispatchers, agents, customers, and internal teams
  • Ensure compliance with UniGroup policies and applicable DOT and FMCSA regulations
  • Support departmental initiatives and perform additional responsibilities as assigned
