About The Position

El Dorado Transit is hiring for Fleet Mechanic I and Fleet Mechanic II, which perform skilled maintenance and repairs on transit vehicles and related equipment. Under immediate supervision, Fleet Mechanic I employees learn and perform routine maintenance and repairs, with assignments becoming more complex as experience grows. Under general supervision, Fleet Mechanic II employees work independently as journey-level mechanics, carrying out the full range of assigned maintenance and repair duties and exercising judgment and initiative. The positions receive no direct supervisory responsibilities. Advancement from Fleet Mechanic I to II depends on satisfactory performance, meeting the II-level qualifications, management confirmation that the employee performs the full range of duties, and management approval. Work includes diagnosing, repairing, rebuilding, and overhauling buses, vans, automobiles, and other transit equipment; road-testing and driving vehicles; identifying unsafe conditions; and installing or repairing accessories such as heaters, mirrors, wheelchair lifts, and safety devices. Mechanics inspect vehicles in the shop and in the field, maintain records, report completed work, estimate and order parts, and may modify or fabricate parts. They use shop tools and test equipment and follow safe work practices, including handling and disposing of hazardous waste. The work is primarily performed in a vehicle workshop, with occasional fieldwork. Employees may encounter loud noise, vibration, chemicals, dust, paint fumes, mechanical and electrical hazards, grease, oils, solvents, hot surfaces, moving machinery and vehicles, temperature extremes, inclement weather, and road hazards. The positions require mobility and stamina for medium to heavy physical work, including climbing, bending, kneeling, and handling objects weighing up to 60 pounds (or heavier with proper equipment).
