About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Fleet Supervisor (or Lead Fleet Mechanic), performs skilled mechanical work involving the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and preventative maintenance of the City's diverse fleet of gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles and equipment. This includes light-duty vehicles, patrol vehicles, heavy-duty trucks, off-road equipment, automated refuse trucks, construction equipment, and small engine equipment. This position is responsible for ensuring City vehicles and equipment operate safely, efficiently, and reliably through high-quality mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic repairs. The Fleet Mechanic utilizes diagnostic equipment, technical knowledge, and fabrication skills to perform routine maintenance, complex repairs, emergency field service, and vehicle outfitting while maintaining compliance with all City policies, environmental regulations, and OSHA safety standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) years of experience performing maintenance and repair of automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, or emergency vehicles (for Fleet Mechanic I).
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing light-duty, heavy-duty, diesel, gasoline, hybrid, and specialty fleet equipment (for Fleet Mechanic II).
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Colorado driver's license required within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to obtain Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months.
  • Ability to successfully pass DOT physical and drug screening when required.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from an accredited automotive or diesel technology program preferred (for Fleet Mechanic I).
  • Graduation from an accredited automotive or diesel technology program strongly preferred (for Fleet Mechanic II).
  • Experience with heavy equipment, plow trucks, loaders, backhoes, patrol vehicles, or refuse equipment is highly preferred (for Fleet Mechanic II).
  • ASE certifications preferred (for Fleet Mechanic I).
  • ASE certifications strongly preferred (for Fleet Mechanic II).
  • Air Brake Certification within six (6) months.
  • State of Colorado Diesel Emissions Certification preferred, or ability to obtain within six (6) months.
  • A/C Recovery & Recycling Certification preferred, or ability to obtain within six (6) months.
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
