About The Position

This is an on-call, part-time, hourly internship position within the Department of Transportation & Infrastructure (DOTI), Fleet Management division. The internship focuses on developing skills as a diesel mechanic, with opportunities to work on a diverse fleet including refuse trucks, street sweepers, and wastewater equipment. DOTI is committed to equity and invests in its people, operates with discipline, uses data to drive decisions, and delivers results. The Fleet Management team is responsible for over 2,500 vehicles and equipment, ensuring high availability and managing maintenance expenses, replacements, purchases, and fuel contracts. Interns will receive a basic toolkit, uniforms, and a voucher for safety shoes and glasses.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Diesel Mechanics program leading to a certificate, licensure or Associate degree in Diesel Mechanics.
  • Ability to work Monday thru Friday, midafternoon through early evening shifts.
  • Current knowledge of and use of hand tools and power tools.
  • Experience using a computerized vehicle diagnostic tool.
  • Knowledge of general shop/vehicle bay safety procedures.
  • A desire to learn the mechanics trade and willing to work on a diverse fleet.
  • Currently enrolled in a trades or vocational accredited program leading to a certificate, licensure, or associate degree, or a recent graduate (within 1 year of completion of a specified program).

Nice To Haves

  • Previous diesel or gas mechanic or parts service provider experience.
  • Candidates that have a passion for this trade.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in inspections of vehicles brought into the shop.
  • Assist in preventative maintenance and check-in services of fleet vehicles.
  • Assist in repairing or replacing worn parts not requiring major mechanical work.
  • Assist in inspecting primary and auxiliary operating systems for loose and worn parts.
  • Assist in vehicle diagnostics using a computer.
