About The Position

The City of Olathe is hiring for Fleet Maintenance Technician I, II, III, and IV positions on our General Fleet / Alternate Shift team. Starting level and pay will be based on verified experience, certifications, and overall qualifications. Candidates who do not meet higher-level certification requirements may still be considered for placement at the appropriate technician level. This team supports general fleet maintenance and repair across a mix of City vehicles and equipment, including automotive vehicles, light- and medium-duty trucks, tractors, lawn mowers, specialized fleet, and support equipment. General Fleet Maintenance Technicians perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of the City’s passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, vans, and other assigned fleet units that support daily municipal operations and essential City services. This work helps keep fleet assets safe, reliable, and ready for service. Responsibilities include inspections, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, electrical, brake, steering, suspension, air conditioning, and drivetrain systems. Positions may be filled at the I, II, III, or IV level depending on the selected candidate’s experience, training, certifications, and demonstrated ability to perform the work at the expected level of independence. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license with favorable driving record
  • Ability to obtain a Kansas Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within 6 months of hire.
  • A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification
  • Minimum Experience: 2 years of relevant automotive, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience (for I)
  • Minimum Experience: 3 years of relevant automotive, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience (for II)
  • Minimum Experience: 6 years of relevant automotive, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience (for III)
  • Minimum Experience: 10 years of relevant automotive, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience (for IV)
  • ASE Brakes, ASE Suspension/Steering, and one additional ASE or EVT certification (for II)
  • Three ASE certifications total, including Brakes, Suspension/Steering, and one additional ASE (for III)
  • ASE Master Mechanic credentials (for IV)
  • 0 to 2 years of related experience (for I)
  • 2 to 4 years of related experience (for II)
  • 4 to 6 years of related experience in fleet, automotive, or equipment maintenance (for III)
  • 6 or more years of progressively responsible related experience, including complex diagnostics and repair work (for IV)
  • High school diploma or GED required (for all levels)
  • Ability to obtain a Kansas Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment, if required by assignment
  • DOT medical certificate within the required timeframe, if required by assignment
  • Air conditioning and refrigerant recovery/recycling certification at hire or within a specified period after hire, depending on assignment

  • Experience with preventive maintenance and repair of passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, and fleet equipment
  • Experience using scan tools, diagnostic software, and computerized maintenance systems

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, brake, suspension, and drivetrain issues
  • Perform preventive maintenance on automotive vehicles, light- and medium-duty trucks, and related equipment to keep City fleet operations safe and reliable
  • Complete repairs on engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical systems
  • Perform equipment installation, fabrication, welding, and acetylene cutting as needed
  • Maintain accurate service and repair records
  • Respond to emergency and after-hours service needs when required
  • Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of the City’s passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, vans, and other assigned fleet units that support daily municipal operations and essential City services.
  • Inspections, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, electrical, brake, steering, suspension, air conditioning, and drivetrain systems.
