About The Position

The Fleet Maintenance Operations Management Trainee (FOMT) program at WM is a 12-month course designed to develop individuals into fleet maintenance manager roles. Fleet Maintenance Managers are responsible for overseeing the entire fleet of primary and secondary equipment, focusing on profitability through effective management of all fleet and maintenance activities within their assigned area. This includes cost control, management development, and upholding high training and safety standards. Upon successful completion of the program, candidates must be willing to relocate within an assigned geographic area to lead a WM Fleet Shop. The program involves significant on-the-job training in the field, supplemented by some classroom instruction, and requires travel. Participants will gain comprehensive knowledge of the Fleet Manager role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree (accredited), or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and three (3) years of relevant fleet maintenance work experience on heavy trucks/equipment.
  • Four (4) years of supervisory/leadership experience in fleet maintenance operations (in addition to education requirements).
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Willingness to work various hours and weekends as necessary.
  • Willingness to work outdoors and/or in a maintenance shop.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
  • Proven problem-solving ability and successful conflict resolution.
  • Diesel or CNG Mechanical experience or Technical Drive.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Must be willing to relocate within an assigned geographic area at the conclusion of the training program.
  • Must be willing to travel during the training program.
  • Must have, or be willing to obtain, a REAL ID or TSA-approved alternative for potential air travel or access to federal property.

Responsibilities

  • Successfully complete the FOMT curriculum and all required training items through the WM Learning Management System.
  • Develop the necessary skills to become a Fleet Manager.
  • Complete assigned computer-based training.
  • Attend and participate in all mandatory group training sessions.
  • Develop a working knowledge of WM's Fleet and general business applications.
  • Develop a working knowledge of heavy equipment functionality and maintenance care, including operation and in-shop maintenance.
  • Learn to effectively manage site personnel through experiential efforts and training.
  • Develop an understanding of financial, accounting, and forecasting processes and systems.
  • Develop a strong understanding and dedication to the WM Safety Program, working with Corporate and local safety teams to foster a safety-conscious culture.
  • Complete required paperwork using fleet maintenance software for vehicle repairs, parts usage documentation, and repair time accounting.
  • Participate in worksite meetings, huddles, and area mentor programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include special projects and interim management assignments.
  • Engage in action and experiential-based learning.
