About The Position

This class is responsible for diagnosing mechanical problems and repairing a variety of equipment including trucks, construction vehicles and equipment. Operates under supervision of the Fleet Shop Supervisor, in accordance with establish policies and procedures. Extended hours, call back and on call availability are required. Performs related work as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited two-year community/technical college, with an associates degree/certification in automotive technology, and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in automotive repair and maintenance, including gasoline and diesel powered equipment
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and a minimum of six (6) years of experience as defined in (A) above
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as defined in (A) and (B) above
  • Functional Employment Test (FET) required
  • Must possess/maintain a valid North Carolina Class A (CDL) Driver’s License

  • Knowledge of repair techniques
  • Knowledge of various types of testing/repair equipment
  • Skill in troubleshooting/correcting defects in motor vehicles/equipment
  • Ability to adapt available tools/parts to specific repair problems
  • Ability to interpret repair manuals/ diagrams
  • Ability to read/understand technical diagrams/sketches of complex equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees

Responsibilities

  • Performing all mechanic repairs/overhauling engines/clutches/brakes/steering/differentials/transmissions and related mechanical units/parts
  • Disassembling motors
  • Repairing/replacing parts/defective wiring for ignition/lighting systems
  • Re-assembling/adjusting/testing repaired equipment
  • Adjusting/realigning brakes
  • Rebuilding alternators/starters
  • Driving/operating vehicles in performing work assignments/responsibilities
