About The Position

This job is an experienced automotive mechanic’s position, requiring the knowledge and ability to perform diagnosis and repairs of minor and major mechanical problems on Agency vehicles and equipment. The role involves working in an open shop environment with exposure to various conditions and potential hazards. The technician will be responsible for maintaining and repairing vehicles in specialized areas such as suspension, steering, brakes, engine performance, electrical systems, and more. Additionally, the position may involve installing decals and window tinting, assisting with administrative functions, and attending training to stay current with technology. The technician must also be alert to conditions that inhibit safe and efficient operation and make recommendations for solutions. The role may require modified schedules or re-assignment during declared emergencies.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in the automotive repair industry as approved by the Fleet Director, or a diploma from an accredited two-year Vocational Training program in Auto Mechanics.
  • Thorough knowledge of the standard tools, materials and practices of the automotive mechanical trade.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to operate, diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trade.
  • Ability to understand and carry out English language oral and written instructions.
  • Obtain and Maintain ASE Automobile Technician Certifications.
  • Obtain and Maintain EVT Law Enforcement Vehicle Technician Certification.
  • Obtain MACS Mobile Air Conditioning Certification.
  • Possess and maintain valid Florida driver's license.
  • Must be able to follow instructions.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE Automotive Technician Certification in any four of the eight specialized automotive categories is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform automotive and equipment maintenance, repair, and diagnostics in specialized areas including Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Heating and Air Conditioning, Engine Performance, Engine Repair, Automotive Transmission/Transaxle, Manual Drive Train and Axles, and Electrical Systems.
  • Assist other technicians when required.
  • Install decals and window tinting on vehicles.
  • Assist Fleet Services Director or Fleet Services Supervisor with administrative functions as required.
  • Attend schools or seminars required to maintain certification and keep abreast with current applied technology.
  • Assist with the inspection of Fleet Services equipment in operation to assure proper safe and efficient functioning.
  • Be alert for conditions or situations which inhibit safe and efficient operation of the Agency or the Fleet Services Division and make recommendations for solutions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, including modified schedule or temporary re-assignment during declared emergency or activations, as determined by the Sheriff.
