Mackenzie Financial CorporationMontreal, QC

About The Position

IGM Financial Inc. is a leading wealth and asset management company in Canada. Mackenzie Investments, a key part of IGM, is seeking a Portfolio Manager, Fixed Income Macro to help drive idea generation, portfolio construction, and research across the platform. The role, based in Montreal, will report to the Head of Macro within the Fixed Income team. The successful candidate will be responsible for generating alpha through top-down macro investing across global rates, sovereign credit, and foreign exchange, with a focus on G10 rates. A significant aspect of the role involves improving portfolio management processes through AI-enabled workflows to enhance research, risk monitoring, and decision-making. The ideal candidate will possess macro judgment, curiosity, a builder mindset, and experience using AI or automation in investment processes. The company values continuous learning, skill development, and collaboration within a hybrid work environment.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Finance, Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • CFA designation, or demonstrated progress toward the CFA, is considered an asset.
  • Typically five or more years of relevant experience in portfolio management, macro research, rates or FX strategy, sovereign research, multi-asset investing, or a related role, with level and title calibrated between ADP and VP based on track record and expected responsibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate differentiated investment ideas and, at the appropriate level, a credible record of contributing to or managing fixed income, macro, multi-asset, and/or asset allocation portfolios.
  • Strong grounding in macro market drivers, valuation, policy regimes, asset pricing, portfolio construction, risk management, derivatives, and implementation across global fixed income and FX markets.
  • Strong programming and data fluency (Python, R, SQL, APIs, dashboards, or similar) and/or clear evidence of having built AI-enabled, automated, or machine-learning-based workflows in an investment context.
  • Familiarity with large language models, modern data pipelines, and systematic monitoring tools is highly desirable; basic chat-tool familiarity alone is not sufficient.
  • Fluency in French is required, given the client-facing and Quebec market responsibilities of the role.
  • Strong intellectual rigour, curiosity, and independent judgment, with a habit of generating original views rather than only reacting to consensus.
  • Ability to move from hypothesis to investable position, with sound judgment on sizing, implementation, and risk.
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative, ownership, and resourcefulness.
  • Disciplined and pragmatic approach to problem-solving, decision-making, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to excel in a collaborative, team-oriented environment and influence peers constructively across portfolio management, research, trading, technology, and distribution.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present clearly and credibly to investment colleagues, clients, advisors, and internal partners.
  • High integrity, accountability, drive, creativity, and a willingness to continuously improve both personal performance and team process.

Nice To Haves

  • CFA designation, or demonstrated progress toward the CFA, is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with large language models, modern data pipelines, and systematic monitoring tools is highly desirable; basic chat-tool familiarity alone is not sufficient.

Responsibilities

  • Focus primarily on idea generation across global markets as a core alpha engine for the funds, with particular emphasis on high-conviction views in G10 rates (directional, curve, and cross-market), complemented by sovereign credit, EM rates, and G10 and EM currencies.
  • Conduct deep top-down macro research and translate views into clear, risk-managed positions.
  • Own or materially contribute to risk management for the portfolios under coverage - sizing positions, allocating risk, monitoring duration, curve, spread, liquidity, and FX exposures, and adjusting positioning as market conditions evolve.
  • Be deeply involved in day-to-day portfolio management activities across mutual funds and active ETF portfolios, including idea debate, implementation, post-trade review, and continuous refinement of the investment process.
  • Contribute to investment thought leadership and help design differentiated fixed income and macro solutions that meet client needs and reflect the team's best ideas.
  • Design, build, or sponsor AI-enabled workflows that improve idea generation, research efficiency, and real-time risk monitoring across the funds. This may include automated market screening, research copilots, agentic workflows, alerting systems, portfolio diagnostics, factor or exposure monitoring, and other decision-support tools.
  • Represent the Mackenzie Fixed Income team in due diligence meetings, institutional discussions, and other client-facing settings, with a particular focus on French-speaking audiences and the Quebec market.
  • Support the Quebec Sales team and broader client franchise through fixed income discussions, written commentaries, and presentations in French and English. Travel within Quebec may be required.
