About The Position

The Fitter position involves identifying items on a bill of materials listed on a sketch, pulling those items, verifying they match the sketch, and fabricating them according to the Job Instruction Sheet and Weld Procedure Sheet. This role requires a strong understanding of safety and environmental guidelines, and collaboration with other departments like Cutting operations and bay pulling to ensure materials are properly staged for fabrication. The Fitter will lay out, position, align, and fit components together, and then bolt, clamp, and weld them. Responsibilities also include cleaning and degreasing weld joints, removing excess weld material, preheating workpieces, cutting metal plates or structural shapes, and examining welds for quality. Additionally, the Fitter will be responsible for loading, transporting, and unloading materials, tools, equipment, and supplies, as well as performing minor maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment.

Requirements

1-2 years of pipe fabrication experience (Fitter I)
2-3 years of pipe fabrication experience (Fitter II)
3-4 plus year of pipe fabrication experience (Fitter III)
5 plus years of pipe fabrication experience (Fitter IV)
General knowledge of tools, equipment, blueprints, models, and technical plans (Fitter I)
General knowledge of machines, designs, repair, and maintenance (Fitter I)
Extensive knowledge of design techniques, production of technical plans, blueprints, models, and drawings (Fitter II)
Extensive knowledge of materials and methods and principles involved in the production of precise technical designs, uses and maintenance (Fitter II)
Expert knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance (Fitter III & IV)
Expert knowledge of design techniques, methods, production of precision technical plans, blueprints and drawings (Fitter III & IV)
Ability to move to any station and determine metallurgy and size without hesitation (Fitter IV)

Responsibilities

Comply with safety and environmental guidelines, policies, and regulations.
Works in conjunction with other departments (Cutting operations and bay pulling) to ensure all relative materials are properly staged and ready for fabrication.
Lay out, positions, aligns and fits components together in various body positions.
Bolts, clamps, and welds together metal components of products, such as piping systems, plate, pipe and tube or structural shapes.
May clean or degrease weld joint or workplace, using wire brush, or portable grinder.
Remove excess weld, defective weld material, slag and spatter, using hand held grinder or gas torch, hand scrapper, grinder, or power chipper.
Preheat work piece, using hand torch.
Cut metal plates or structural shapes.
Examine weld for bead size and other specifications.
Loads, transports and unloads material, tools, equipment, and supplies.
Perform minor maintenance or cleaning activities of tools and equipment.
