Fitter/Welder Trainee

About The Position

Under the supervision of the welding instructor, the trainee is taught Shop Safety, the fundamentals of Flux Cored Arc Welding (F.C.A.W.), and basic burning and scarfing. The training program takes 4-6 weeks to complete. Upon completing the training program successfully, the trainee will either be transferred to our Complex Fabrication or Marine department. Training will be conducted indoors; work assignments may be outside in all types of weather and/or covered fabrication bay.

Requirements

  • Basic math skills; ability to convert fractions.
  • Ability to read a tape measure.
  • Ability to follow verbal/written instructions.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers/trainers.
  • Motivated to continuously improve and learn new skills.
  • Previous experience is not required.

Nice To Haves

  • A demonstrated interest in welding is advantageous, as well as any previous welding experience at school or work.
  • Manufacturing or construction experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to safely and properly set up and operate welding and burning equipment.
  • Learn to safely produce quality welds in flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions.
  • Learn to fit, tack, and weld component parts in position, and examine welds for adherence to specification.
  • Pass successfully 1/16" flux core wire in all positions with unlimited thickness plate to become Fitter/Welder.
