About The Position

The Fitout Trades Assistant plays a crucial role in maintaining safe work practices and adhering to safety policies and procedures. This position involves the safe and effective use of various craft-related tools and equipment, ensuring the quality of one's own work, and following construction procedures in compliance with Austal USA standards and project specifications. The assistant is responsible for receiving and carrying out instructions, maintaining housekeeping, conserving materials, and completing daily work assignments. They will also assist other trades, monitor the working environment for compliance with regulations, and adhere to the Austal USA’s “Equal Opportunity and Anti-Harassment Policy.” A willingness to cross-craft within the Fitout Department is expected. Specific duties may include performing marine carpentry functions such as prefabricating accommodation cabins, assisting with the installation of bulkheads, furniture, ceiling tiles, internal fitout doors, external fitout items, ceiling grids, and cutting/installing extrusions. In HVAC, duties involve measuring, cutting, and installing ductwork, drilling holes, bolting hangers, and installing dampers, valves, and diffusers. For insulation, tasks include basic mark-outs, shooting pins, insulating deck heads, side shells, beams, and ductwork, grinding spots, smoothing surfaces, applying primers, and removing fixtures prior to painting.

Requirements

  • Diploma/GED or comparable trade experience; comparable trade experience is defined as 5 or more years of experience working in the applicable trade, 2 years of experience in shipbuilding, or education in the trade comparable to apprenticeship.
  • Basic understanding of practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in cabinet making, carpentry, industrial insulation and HVAC preferred.
  • Basic mechanical skills and trades mathematics.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide.
  • Ability to measure using the Metric and English system.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
  • The ability to understand directions and follow instructions; both oral and written.
  • Working knowledge of practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the insulation process.
  • Basic skills in shop mathematics and science.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and blueprints.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older at time of application.
  • Able to provide proof of US Person Status.
  • No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date.
  • No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date.
  • Willing to submit to a drug screen.
  • Willing to submit to a background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Applicable Trade Technical Diploma, Certificate or equivalent preferred.
  • Knowledge of shipyard terminology such as general ship structure and vessel layout preferred.
  • Working knowledge of marine joiner and HVAC activities a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains housekeeping, keeps worksite free of rubbish, keeps materials and equipment stowed in an orderly manner.
  • Conserves waste of consumables and other material.
  • Accountable for completion of daily work assignments including the completion and signatures for work completion and quality.
  • Learns on-the-job as an on-the-job trainee.
  • Assists or works with other trades or Austal USA employees as directed.
  • Monitors working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental and health regulations and report deficiencies to supervisor.

  • Displays a willingness to cross craft within Fitout Dept.
  • Performs marine carpentry functions such as but not limited to prefabbing accommodation cabins and various compartments under supervision.
  • Assists with the lay-out and installation of bulkheads, furniture, ceiling ramps and tiles in accordance with drawings under supervision.
  • Assists with the installation of internal fitout doors including all locks and hold backs.
  • Performs basic layout and installation of all types of external fitout items under supervision.
  • Assists with the installation of ceiling grids in accordance with drawings.
  • Assists with the cutting and install of all types of extrusions, draft stops and smoke boundaries.
  • Performs Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning functions such as but not limited to the measuring, cutting and installation of duct work in accordance with drawings and under supervision.
  • Assists with the drilling of holes, bolting up hangers and duct.
  • Installs dampers, valves, and diffuser with minimal supervision.
  • Performs basic mark outs, shoot pins, and insulate deck heads, side shells, beams, and all duct with minimal supervision.
  • Grinds spots for shooting pins.
  • Smooths surfaces, using sandpaper, scrapers, brushes, steel wool, or sanding machines.
  • Applies primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, for finish coats.
  • Removes fixtures such as pictures, door knobs, lamps, or electric switch covers prior to painting.
  • Applies paint, stain, varnish, enamel, or other finishes to equipment, buildings, bridges, or other structures, using brushes, spray guns, or rollers.
