About The Position

The Fitness Specialist works under the supervision of the Athletic Trainer to manage extracurricular Fitness Center operations and programming for 6th-12th grade students and staff/faculty. They are responsible for creating and maintaining an inclusive, supportive environment with guidance and programming that develops physical literacy and long-term athlete development. This position regularly collaborates with the Athletic Department staff, coaches, and Health and Wellness Faculty to promote a culture of health, well-being, and performance across the K-12 community. The Fitness Specialist covers the regular Fitness Center hours (3:00-5:00 p.m. on regularly scheduled school days), with the possibility of additional time depending on scheduled fitness activities (e.g. team workouts, morning faculty/staff sessions). We are looking for an individual who desires to build an inclusive fitness environment and is passionate about teaching lifelong fitness and movement skills to a diverse community. Qualified candidates will have excellent interpersonal skills, a positive teaching style, and experience conducting adult and youth personal training in individual and group environments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Physical Education, or a related field, OR a current and relevant professional certification credentialed by an independent accreditation agency— for example, the NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® (CSCS®) certification. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in this position may be considered.
  • Experience in strength and conditioning programming for youth athletes.
  • A strong working knowledge and teaching skills in analysis and techniques of strength training.
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and positive coaching style.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google applications.
  • Ability to demonstrate the appropriate skills and techniques to be used by participants.
  • Ability to visually monitor participants.
  • Sitting, standing, lifting, and carrying up to 70lbs.
  • Reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, kneeling, and moving equipment/boxes up to 70lbs.
  • Ability to reason logically and make sound decisions, to consider alternative and diverse perspectives, to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, to remain poised under all circumstances, and to interact effectively with people in a positive manner that creates confidence and trust.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and well-equipped fitness facility.
  • Supervise the Fitness Center during scheduled hours.
  • Promote Fitness Center opportunities to students, faculty/staff, and coaches.
  • Provide orientation to faculty/staff participants and manage required release forms.
  • Teach safe and effective strength training principles, including technique, progression, and injury prevention.
  • Support participants at the introductory level build confidence and establish a foundation in fitness.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously refine individual and team-based workout programs.
  • Adapt coaching and programs to meet the diverse needs, abilities, and developmental levels of all participants.
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Trainer on rehabilitation and modified exercise for athletes recovering from injury/illness.
  • Communicate effectively with participants, coaches, and the Athletic Department staff.
  • Work collaboratively with Athletic Department staff, coaches, and Health and Wellness faculty to share space and resources.
  • Attend meetings/trainings scheduled by the Athletic Department staff.
  • Comply with all school and state policies and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
