About The Position

Under the supervision of the COO, a Group Fitness Instructor teaches a safe and effective class which promotes total fitness development for members. The position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the Plattsburgh YMCA is conveyed. The role emphasizes providing a quality experience for everyone, including health seekers, members, participants, internal customers, fellow staff members, vendors, and others. Relationship-building is a top priority, requiring courtesy, respect, integrity, active listening, clear communication, and embracing diversity. The instructor must be willing to learn, grow, and accept constructive criticism while working cooperatively as a team member.

Requirements

  • Possess and maintain current CPR/AED certification & Standard First Aid.
  • Possess a valid and current fitness instructor certification (e.g., Les Mills, Silver Sneakers, Silver & Fit, Zumba courses, Group Cycle).
  • Must be able to bend and stoop occasionally.
  • Must be able to lift at least 15 pounds occasionally.

  • Expand his/her knowledge by seeking out and attending Continuing Education in the health and fitness industry as required by certification.
  • Be a professional representative of the YMCA.
  • Be able to work as a team member, assisting fellow staff when necessary.
  • Make yourself available to all members of the YMCA.
  • Share your knowledge and be a resource for sound health and fitness information.
  • Attendance at staff meetings is mandatory.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts group exercise classes according to the Plattsburgh YMCA quality guidelines and specific class format.
  • Teaches to all fitness levels and modifies class choreography to meet multiple fitness abilities.
  • Supervises class participants and activities to ensure safety and reports any irregularities to the supervisor immediately.
  • Maintains an active interest in and knowledge of current branch programs and shares information with members and the community.
  • Ensures studio/exercise classroom and equipment are neat and clean.
  • Understands and follows YMCA emergency procedures.
  • Maintains good attendance.
  • Gives supervisor at least two week's notice of any needed schedule changes impacting classes.
  • Assumes total responsibility for obtaining qualified substitutes when needed and informs supervisor.
  • Prepares for class for at least 10 minutes before and is available for members for at least five minutes after class.
  • Arrives for assigned class well-groomed and in proper uniform.
  • Promotes or endorses only YMCA program products or services to any member or guest.
