About The Position

American University is a student-centered research institution located in Washington, DC, with highly-ranked schools and colleges, internationally-renowned faculty, and a reputation for creating meaningful change in the world. The Fitness Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the development, management, and supervision of all fitness programs, including group exercise, personal training, instructional programs, and wellness activities. This role will assist the Associate Director with hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, and evaluation of group exercise instructors and personal trainers. The coordinator will also instruct/lead exercise classes/programs as needed and serve as manager on duty a minimum of three times a week, including occasional weekends. As manager on duty, this individual will manage the day-to-day operations of the fitness center, including staff supervision, financial transactions, and member sales and service.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • 1 - 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Current CPR/AED certified.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree.
  • 2 - 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in group exercise instruction and/or administration.
  • At least one nationally recognized and accredited group exercise certification.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated basis experience coordinating fitness/wellness programs with specific experience supporting the growth and development of group exercise and/or personal training programs in a collegiate setting.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the oversight of all health and fitness programs, which include but are not limited to group fitness, personal training, instructional programs and wellness activities.
  • Act as Manager on Duty a minimum of three times a week which will include at least one evening shift and occasional weekends.
  • Administrative work to include reviewing and updating training procedures and manuals to meet and maintain industry standards.
  • Hire, train, and evaluate group exercise instructors and assist the Associate Director with the personal training staff.
  • Participate in the development of programs, departmental objectives, and long range planning by performing research, providing recommendations, and implementing plans as appropriate.
