About The Position

This is a full-time, union position with benefits and time off, upon meeting eligibility requirements. Employees start out at pay range Level 1 and progress through six pay range levels. There is a one year probationary period. JOB SUMMARY: This position oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of a variety of fitness and wellness initiatives while ensuring excellence in equipment standards and instructor coordination. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. An employee in this position must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and must maintain a professional demeanor in dealing with coworkers, supervisors and the public.

Requirements

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree from a two-year (2) college or technical school or higher education in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Recreation Management, Sports Management, Wellness, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in fitness programming, recreation management, or related field.
  • Experience supervising staff and coordinating wellness programs preferred.
  • Must be able to use Microsoft Office; experience with recreation management software preferred.
  • CPR/AED Certification
  • First Aid Certification
  • Lifeguard Certification
  • Nationally recognized Group Fitness Instructor Certification and Personal Training Certification (preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of fitness programming principles and wellness trends
  • Ability to lead and motivate diverse populations

  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities
  • Must be able to use Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and recreation management software

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate fitness instructors and contracted wellness professionals.
  • Develop, coordinate, schedule, instruct, manage and evaluate structured, year-round fitness classes, personal training, wellness initiatives, special events and programs for participants of all ages and fitness levels
  • Monitor program participation trends and event effectiveness while recommending enhancements, new offerings, and operational improvements.
  • Maintain instructor certifications, training records, and compliance documentation.
  • Provide ongoing leadership, coaching, and performance feedback to instructors.
  • Serve as a substitute instructor when necessary to ensure consistent program delivery.
  • Ensures all programs and events are properly staffed, organized, safe, and effectively operated from setup through breakdown.
  • Coordinates scheduling, equipment usage, instructor communication, participant engagement, and overall event/program flow.
  • Oversee the overall fitness atmosphere and ensure a clean, safe, motivating, and inclusive environment.
  • Monitor fitness equipment condition, maintenance schedules, and operational functionality.
  • Track equipment lifespan and recommend replacements or upgrades as needed.
  • Identify and report safety concerns or maintenance issues promptly.
  • Maintain accurate program records, attendance reports, evaluations, participation data, and makes recommendations regarding program performance and future initiatives.
  • Assist in budget planning related to fitness programming, equipment purchases, and facility enhancements.
  • Works in cooperation with the department administration to develop and recommend staffing, facility and programming policies and fee structures while working towards cost recovery objectives.
  • Assist with promotional materials, program marketing, and member communication.
  • May assist with management of department facilities in the absence of director. This may include the reception desk, lifeguarding and fieldhouse based on staff availability.
  • Perform routine office functions (i.e. assist in answering phones, scheduling facilities, program registration, etc.)
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws for seasonal and part-time staff. Responsibilities may include interviewing, recommending and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Directly supervises contracted fitness instructors, contracted trainers, and PT/Seasonal programming staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
