About The Position

Work within the Spokane Tribal Fisheries Department assisting Lake Roosevelt Sturgeon Recovery Project biologists with White Sturgeon recovery efforts. Technicians will assist biologists with extensive field work (typically 10 hrs./day, 4 days/week, in inclement weather conditions), data collection (biometric data, abundance data, etc.), maintenance of boats and survey gear (telemetry equipment, setlines, etc.), and perform data entry. During larval collection efforts (June-July) techs will be required to work holidays, nights, and weekends. Techs will be extensively trained in various field and laboratory safety protocols and will be provided personal protective equipment including footwear, life jackets, and rain gear. Techs will be expected to maintain a weekly log of their activities and accomplishments. Techs will learn how fisheries data they collect informs management actions which preserve and enhance sturgeon within Lake Roosevelt. If needed, techs may also help on other field projects including Fall Walleye Index Netting, Northern Pike suppression, and other fisheries surveys. Techs will be responsible for other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Completed High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Good employment history with references.
  • Valid State Driver’s License and good driving record.
  • Must have computer knowledge and skills for data entry.
  • Must be able to travel and stay overnight for up to 5 days at a time.
  • Must be able to work holidays, nights, and weekends.
  • Must be physically capable of performing job duties, at times in adverse weather conditions and rough terrain/water.
  • Ability to work from mid-June through the end of October.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with adult stock assessment surveys using set lines.
  • Assist with larval collections efforts for the conservation aquaculture program.
  • Assist with acoustic telemetry downloads and maintenance.
  • Assist with annual recruitment monitoring using small hook set lines.
  • Aid in data input into Microsoft Excel.
  • Assist with sample organization and archiving.
  • General equipment (boats and sampling gear) and facility maintenance.
  • Assist in other fisheries monitoring activities using electrofishing, gillnetting, and seining gear
