Fisheries Research scientist IV-FRM
About The Position
The Fisheries Research Scientist IV will serve as the field crew lead for the Cle Elum sockeye reintroduction program and the Bull Trout reintroduction and conservation program. This role requires performing a variety of technical and skilled tasks related to fisheries management, including data collection, management, analysis, technical writing, and oral presentation of research results. The scientist will also represent the Yakama Nation and the Bull Trout and Sockeye program in technical working groups with stakeholders. Field duties are extensive and include spawning ground and carcass surveys, GIS mapping, fish capture and tagging, various netting operations, detailed field data recording, monitoring fish migration, fish culturing, fish rescue, boat operation, and managing fish trapping facilities.
Requirements
- Four (4) years of higher education leading to a degree in the sciences.
- Five (5) years of successful employment history as a Fisheries Biologist III or higher.
- Proficiency in the use of technical software used in data management, statistical analyses, and dissemination of data.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
- Must pass a pre-employment background check.
- Possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Tribal Driver Permit with Defensive Driving Course certificate (to be updated every 2 years).

- Five (5) or more years as a professional Sockeye Salmon manager.
- Five (5) or more years as a professional Coho Salmon manager.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the field crew lead for the Cle Elum sockeye reintroduction program and the Bull Trout reintroduction and conservation program.
- Perform data collection, data management, and data analysis related to fisheries management.
- Conduct technical writing and oral presentations of research results.
- Represent the Yakama Nation and the Bull Trout and Sockeye program in technical working groups with stakeholders.
- Conduct spawning ground and carcass surveys.
- Perform GIS mapping of spawner distributions.
- Capture, tag (PIT, floy, acoustic), and release fish.
- Operate gill nets, Oneida trap nets, and screw traps.
- Record detailed field data.
- Monitor and evaluate fish migration and emigration.
- Engage in fish culturing and fish rescue.
- Operate boats.
- Manage operations at fish trapping facilities.
- Perform Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tagging of juvenile and adult salmonids.
- Perform acoustic tagging of juvenile and adult salmonids.
- Conduct tag tracking and monitoring.
- Monitor early life history stages, including preparing and mapping research sites, spawning fish at stream side, building artificial redds, deploying egg boxes, downloading temperature data, enumerating developing fish, and deploying, retrieving, and downloading data from technical monitoring gear.
- Conduct spawning ground surveys for genetic sampling, carcass recovery, and carcass condition.
- Operate the off-ladder adult fish facility at Priest Rapids Dam and the Roza Adult Fish Monitoring Facility.
- Safely collect and transport juvenile and adult salmonids.
- Collect various types of field data related to monitoring and evaluation in fisheries management.
