About The Position

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is seeking a motivated Fisheries Biologist II to join our Aquatic Invasive Species Branch in Frankfort. This position is responsible for planning and conducting various fisheries assessments, analyzing biological data, and developing management recommendations related to invasive carp and Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) management. The successful candidate will have experience and knowledge with database programs, fish and wildlife programs and projects, strong organizational skills, and a strong work ethic. This is a grant funded time-limited (GFTL) position, meaning employment duration shall not exceed the life of the grant. Work is field-oriented and hands-on, often performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and river environments. The classification includes responsibility for project leadership, data analysis, reporting, and contributing to statewide fisheries management objectives.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree.
  • 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in biological sciences, including 4 courses (12 semester or 18 quarter hours) in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (6 semester hours directly related to fisheries science and at least one course covering principles of fisheries science and management).
  • 15 semester hours (23 quarter hours) in physical sciences.
  • 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) in mathematics and statistics (including one calculus and one statistics OR two statistics courses).
  • 9 semester hours (13 quarter hours) in communications and human dimensions (including verbal and writing courses).
  • One year of professional experience in fishery research, fishery management, or a related field.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment.
  • Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficient with boat trailering and operation in various waterbodies and weather conditions.
  • Well versed in freshwater fish identification.
  • Conducting fish sampling techniques including gill nets, electrofishing, and trawls.
  • Must be able to swim.
  • Proficient with Microsoft programs including Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Data analysis with SAS or program R preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct electrofishing and other fish population surveys on rivers
  • Analyze biological data and prepare technical reports
  • Develop and implement management plans and recommendations
  • Provide input on regulation changes and fisheries policy
  • Coordinate with partners, stakeholders, and the public
