About The Position

The Fisheries Division is seeking a qualified candidate to serve as a Fish and Wildlife Technician III in the Central Fisheries District, located in Frankfort, Kentucky. This role offers an exciting, innovative, and rewarding environment within the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR), focusing on conserving the Commonwealth’s fish and wildlife resources and providing opportunities for public enjoyment of the outdoors through activities like fishing, hunting, boating, recreational shooting, and wildlife watching.

Requirements

  • High school graduate.
  • Three years of fishery, wildlife or habitat management/development experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this classification.
  • Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with fisheries technical work is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Assist biologist(s) with field data collections using standardized fisheries methods and appropriate gear types.
  • Act as crew leader by coordinating the work of fish and wildlife technicians while collecting data and in the absence of the biologist(s).
  • Operate and maintain all project equipment including boats, trailers, vehicles, trap nets, hoop nets, gill nets, and other sampling equipment and prepares for field use.
  • Responsible for facility maintenance at state owned lakes.
  • Perform various tasks as assigned in the lab and office including collecting otoliths for aging, data entry, and angler pressure counts, all adhering to standardized methods.
  • Follow state and KDFWR policies and procedures in the purchasing of supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Monitor project spending and maintain project inventories.
  • Track/code daily work activities in detail for federal grant reports.
  • Assist various fisheries staff with population studies, habitat improvement work, fish harvest, and fish stocking.
  • Interact professionally with the public and staff when conducting field sampling, creel and angler attitude surveys and fishing events.
  • Communicate regulations and policies to the public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Some overtime and overnight travel are required.
