About The Position

This position performs technician level duties for wildlife management activities including caribou, moose and muskoxen studies in Unit 18, 23, 22, 26A. (e.g., assisting with surveys, captures, and data collection). This position works closely with the Region 5 staff of Wildlife Area Biologists, Assistant Area Biologists, and other Research Biologists. This work group manages wildlife populations and participates in a diverse array of wildlife projects and public processes. The mission of the Division of Wildlife Conservation is to conserve and enhance Alaska's wildlife and habitats and provide for a wide range of public uses and benefits. The incumbent assists in maintaining and enhancing opportunities to hunt, trap and view wildlife while providing opportunities for Alaskans to gain knowledge of and appreciation for all of Alaska's wildlife, its management, and ways to interact with wildlife safely and ethically. Requirements

  • Ability to gather, organize, and summarize data to support biologists with reporting needs.
  • Ability to organize and maintain files, track permits and reports, manage office supplies and equipment, assist with program scheduling, meeting coordination, and the accurate presentation of public information resources.
  • Ability to work carefully and safely with large and small game animals and with drugs and chemicals.
  • Ability to safely operate boats, snowmobiles, ATV’s, power tools and other field and research equipment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with field based and regional staff to accomplish goals.
  • Experience setting priorities, breaking down complex tasks, and communicating ideas in an organized and understandable way, both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience handling firearms and proficiency in firearm use.
  • Experience conducting low-level aerial wildlife surveys in fixed-wing aircraft.
  • High school graduation or the equivalent.
  • One year of experience as an advanced fish and wildlife technician or aide (equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 4 with the State of Alaska).
  • OR Six years of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
