About The Position

The Virginia Department of Corrections is seeking a dependable, organized, and detail-oriented individual to fill a wage position within the Financial Systems and Reporting Unit. This position will be responsible for managing an established centralized mailbox that receives pay statement request forms from all 37 correctional facilities. These requests are submitted on behalf of incarcerated individuals seeking documentation of community service or work performed during incarceration. The pay statements may be used to support requests for credits toward court-imposed fines and costs. This is an hourly position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The hourly employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All hourly employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This hourly position offers no state benefits.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience performing detailed work with numerical data and to make mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately.
  • Working experience with bookkeeping/accounting principles and practices.
  • Experience researching and retrieving relevant work assignment, payroll, and earnings information from applicable systems.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing routine financial reports and statements.
  • Considerable knowledge of office practices, procedures, and office equipment.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of Microsoft Office to include Word and Excel to accomplish office support requirements.
  • Demonstrated skill in inputting data into an automated database other than Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to provide information and communicate effectively with employees and staff.
  • Ability to interpret and follow prescribed operating instructions and related policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Advance Knowledge in accounting/bookkeeping or equivalent training.
  • Experience with payroll, financial systems, records management, or correctional operations.
