About The Position

Under the supervision of the Area Director of Surgical Services, the Surgical Assistant assists the operating surgeon in the care of patients in surgery and performs selected duties. This role involves assisting and scrubbing in surgery, maintaining homeostasis, handling of tissue, and closing of wound layers as directed by the surgeon. The Surgical Assistant is responsible for preparing for all cases by ensuring the correct working equipment, instrumentation, and supplies are available. They also facilitate timely starts by supervising or performing the opening of the case, positioning, catheter placement, prepping, and draping. The position requires maintaining and updating self-knowledge and skills related to instruments, equipment, and specialty techniques. The Surgical Assistant provides a safe, professional, and efficient environment for the surgical patient, maintaining asepsis and knowledge of anatomy and physiology as it relates to the surgical procedure. This role also involves maintaining established company/hospital policies, procedures, directives, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Additionally, the Surgical Assistant represents Firelands Regional Medical Center (FRMC) to the community, acting as an ambassador and advocate.

Requirements

  • CSTFA or RN.
  • Candidate must have or be working toward being a graduate of an accredited program and certified as a Certified Surgical Technician Certified First Assist (CSTCFA) or a Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA).
  • Minimum of four (4) years related experience in the Operating Room.
  • Strong attention to details, high degree of persuasiveness.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and updates self-knowledge and skill of instruments, equipment, and specialty techniques.
  • Provides a safe, professional and efficient environment for the surgical patient, maintaining asepsis and knowledge of anatomy and physiology as it relates to the surgical procedure.
  • Maintains established company/hospital policies, procedures, directives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control standards appropriate to this position.
  • Represents FRMC to the community.
  • Acts as an ambassador and advocate for FRMC.
