Firmware Engineer

Normal Computing Corporation•Palo Alto, CA

About The Position

Normal Computing is an applied AI company building foundational hardware and software for the semiconductor industry, AI infrastructure, and broader computing systems. The company works across New York City, Mountain View, London, Copenhagen, and Seoul. As a Firmware Engineer, you will develop low-level firmware for an embedded processor on a system-on-chip (SoC). The firmware will provide an API layer connecting higher-level software to Normal’s AI acceleration hardware and physics-inspired ASICs. You will collaborate with hardware and software design teams, work across software simulation, RTL simulation, and physical hardware environments, and debug in prototyping and ASIC settings. You will also specify and create the firmware development environment and develop verification and stress-testing processes to ensure production-quality firmware. Normal Computing is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to an inclusive workplace. It provides reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities upon request.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in firmware development.
  • Experience specifying and creating a firmware development environment for a shipping product.
  • Expertise in various firmware languages and target architectures.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • RISC-V experience.
  • FPGA and in-circuit debug experience.
  • Experience with AI acceleration hardware.
  • Hands-on use of LLMs or agentic tools in development workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Develop firmware for an embedded processor on an SoC, including an API that bridges higher-level software to the hardware layer.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software engineers to understand and specify API requirements.
  • Acquire and configure tools for the firmware development environment, including compilers, simulators, and debuggers.
  • Work across software simulation, RTL simulation, and physical hardware environments.
  • Debug firmware in prototyping and ASIC environments.
  • Develop a verification and stress-test plan and environment to ensure production-quality firmware.
