Firmware / Embedded Systems Engineer - Robotics

HFBAC•San Mateo, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

The Firmware / Embedded Systems Engineer will develop firmware that powers physical robots, including humanoids, quadrupeds, and warehouse systems. The role is with a robotics AI company building a general-purpose AI brain that can run on different robots, and involves working with robotics researchers and engineers. This is an on-site position in the Bay Area, five days per week. The engineer will write firmware for BLDC motor control on microcontrollers and embedded Linux, build real-time systems, develop and debug communication interfaces, bring up new PCBAs with the hardware team, integrate hardware into robots, and connect firmware to ROS/DDS. The company describes its funding as over $1 billion and offers competitive equity. Visa transfers are welcome, including H-1B and OPT.

Requirements

  • 3–10 years of firmware or embedded experience in C/C++ for motor control or robotics.
  • Hands-on BLDC motor control experience, including FOC and PWM; this is essential.
  • Real-time embedded experience and confidence with low-level protocols.
  • A degree in electrical engineering, robotics, or mechatronics.
  • Comfort working in a hardware lab and ability to thrive without heavy process.

Nice To Haves

  • Robotics startup experience.
  • PCBA bring-up experience.
  • ROS or DDS experience.

Responsibilities

  • Write firmware for BLDC motor control, including FOC, PWM, current control, and position control, on microcontrollers and embedded Linux.
  • Design, debug, and integrate CAN, RS-485, SPI, and UART communication.
  • Build real-time systems on FreeRTOS, RT Linux, or VxWorks.
  • Bring up new PCBAs with the hardware team and integrate them into robots.
  • Connect firmware to ROS/DDS so robots communicate seamlessly.

Benefits

  • Competitive equity.
  • Visa transfers welcome, including H-1B and OPT.
  • Direct access to the founders and no middle management.
  • Opportunity to work with real robots and prototype aggressively, supported by over $1 billion in funding.
