About The Position

The Alternate Hire Firefighter position requires individuals to possess specific certifications and experience in firefighting and emergency medical services. Applicants must meet age, driver's license, and background check requirements. The role involves responding to emergencies, providing medical assistance, and participating in fire suppression activities. Successful candidates will undergo a rigorous selection process including background checks, agility tests, physical examinations, and psychological evaluations.

Requirements

  • Basic Structural Firefighter certification through Texas Commission of Fire Protection (TCFP) or equivalent.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), or Paramedic certification issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) or National Registry.
  • Two (2) years of experience as either a certified/licensed Firefighter, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Successfully complete a background check.
  • Successfully complete an agility test.
  • Successfully complete a physical examination.
  • Successfully complete a psychological evaluation.
  • Successfully complete a drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergency calls, including fires, medical emergencies, and hazardous material incidents.
  • Perform fire suppression duties, including operating fire apparatus and equipment.
  • Provide emergency medical care as a certified EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic.
  • Participate in fire prevention activities and public education programs.
  • Maintain fire equipment and apparatus in a state of readiness.
  • Conduct training and drills to maintain skills and proficiency.
  • Adhere to all departmental policies and procedures.

  • Education Pay: $50 - $200 per month depending on degree
  • Certification Pay: Various certifications ranging from $30 to $100 monthly
