About The Position

The Town of Charlton is seeking Volunteer Firefighters to join our team. Candidates must successfully complete the Massachusetts Fire Academy Call/Volunteer Recruit Firefighter Training Program within the timeframe established by the department (typically within the first 12–18 months of appointment), unless the member holds equivalent Firefighter I/II certification recognized by the Massachusetts Fire Training Council. The Call/Volunteer Recruit Program is conducted by the Massachusetts Fire Academy and leads to certification consistent with NFPA Firefighter I and II standards. Members must maintain all required certifications, including EMT, CPR, and applicable continuing education requirements. Failure to complete required training within the established timeframe may result in restriction of duties, change in status, or termination of volunteer membership.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum age requirement as established by department policy.
  • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license.
  • Current Massachusetts EMT certification (Basic or higher).
  • Current CPR certification at the healthcare provider level.
  • Firefighter I/II certification or ability to obtain within timeframe established by department policy.
  • Physical strength and stamina to perform strenuous tasks in hazardous environments.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to teamwork and professional conduct.

Nice To Haves

  • Massachusetts Fire Academy Call/Volunteer Recruit Firefighter Training Program completion (within 12-18 months if not already certified).

Responsibilities
