About The Position

This position involves fighting fires, protecting and saving lives and property, and encouraging fire prevention. The role requires maintaining fire equipment and facilities. Firefighter shifts are typically 24 hours with 48 hours off between shifts. The work is hazardous and involves a variety of routine assignments. Firefighters may be assigned to drive fire apparatus in addition to other responsibilities. Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Completion of Firefighter II training program.
  • Completion of Emergency Medical Technician course, as established by Fire Chief within the first year of employment.
  • Ability to handle the physical requirements of the job.
  • Availability to work shift assignments.
  • Must participate in and satisfactorily complete training programs required by the Fire Chief, including river rescue, hazardous materials response, fire control systems, and emergency victim care.
  • Ability to document identity and employment eligibility with three (3) days of original appointment.
  • State of Ohio motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Firefighter II and Emergency Medical Technician certification within 1 year of employment.
  • Must be 18 years of age for Firefighter appointment.
  • No person shall be eligible to receive an original appointment on or after the person's forty-first birthday.
  • Must have submitted an electronic application by the deadline date.
  • Applicants having any disability that would require special testing arrangements for the written exam should notify the Civil Service Office regarding the need for special accommodations.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to emergency medical calls and fire alarms, following firefighting and rescue strategies as directed by the Incident Commander.
  • Extinguishes fires by placing hoses and ladders, climbing ladders, operating pumps, and directing streams of water or using other extinguishing agents.
  • Ventilates structures by opening windows, cutting holes, or other means.
  • Operates aerial ladders, fire extinguishers, and other hand tools as needed.
  • Works inside, outside, or on top of burning and smoke-filled structures.
  • Rescues persons trapped in burning buildings.
  • Takes appropriate measures to protect and preserve lives and property.
  • Responds to vehicle and boating accidents, drownings, heart attacks, hazardous material spills, and other emergency situations.
  • Administers emergency medical care and CPR, and takes other actions to assist injured persons.
  • Responds to situations such as flooded basements, gas leaks, and other requests.
  • Conducts salvage operations, including placing salvage covers, removing excess water, shoveling debris, and patching windows/holes.
  • Assists in fire investigations to determine the origin of fires upon request.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment in safe operating condition, including refueling vehicles, refilling water tanks, recharging air bottles and extinguishers, cleaning trucks and hand tools, and drying/reloading hoses.
  • Maintains vehicles and equipment in proper mechanical operational condition using daily and weekly checklists.
  • Performs general maintenance and housekeeping duties for fire division facilities, buildings, and grounds, including cutting grass, sweeping/washing floors and walls, cleaning living areas, and performing general repair work.
  • Checks, flushes, and paints hydrants as needed.
  • Performs fire prevention duties, including inspecting commercial/public buildings, training personnel in evacuation procedures and extinguisher use, and making presentations on fire prevention.
  • Completes fire and EMS run sheets, equipment check records, and other necessary documentation.
  • Maintains and improves rescue, firefighting, and emergency medical skills by attending training sessions and studying relevant materials.
  • Maintains current knowledge of department technology, City street/landmark locations, and all division equipment.
  • Conducts tours of the firehouse and equipment to school children and the public, promoting fire prevention and safety.
