About The Position

This is beginning level firefighting and emergency medical services (EMS) work for the purpose of training to become a Firefighter/EMT or Paramedic, involving initial academic and on-the-job, in-service training and development prior to receiving State certification and promotion to Firefighter/EMT or Paramedic upon graduation from the Fire Academy and EMT or Paramedic school. Employees in this position are expected to be able to perform all work tasks and comply with any work schedules, attendance, or duty requirements which may be established by City of Plant City or Plant City Fire Department. As a condition of employment with the City of Plant City Fire Rescue Department, candidates must attend and successfully graduate from a local Fire and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Academy. Upon completion of the academy, candidates are required to take and pass the State Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician Certification Examinations. Successful certification is necessary to qualify for and maintain employment with the City of Plant City Fire Rescue Department.

Requirements

• High school diploma or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license.
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations and standards.
• Knowledge of general fire department operations.
• Knowledge of safety practices and procedures, basic mathematics and correct English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
• Ability to react quickly and calmly to emergency situations.
• Ability to learn and comply with department rules, regulations and policies.
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle and learn the geography of the city, location of fire hydrants and major fire hazards.
• Ability to communicate effectively and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform prolonged and difficult work under adverse conditions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other City employees, outside agencies and the general public.
• Ability to learn a wide variety of duties and methods within a reasonable training period.
• Ability and willingness to learn new methods and techniques.

Responsibilities

• Attend a local EMT program as well as a state-approved Fire Academy with successful completion of both programs and passing state exams.
• Learning how to don personal protective equipment, work in enclosed areas, deploy and connect hoses, hold nozzles that direct water streams, raise and climb ladders, use fire extinguishers, prying tools, ropes, and other fire and medical equipment.
• Cleans and maintains fire station facilities and equipment and other related apparatus.
• Recruits shall not represent themselves as sworn firefighters.
• Recruits shall not utilize Plant City Fire Rescue office facilities or equipment for any purposes other than authorized training.
• Recruits shall conform to physical standards as required by Plant City Fire Rescue.
• All recruits shall be provided with a copy of the standard operating procedures manual, and all recruits shall familiarize themselves with department SOPs.
• Other duties may be assigned as dictated by operational necessity.
• In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee’s department, Emergency Management or City Administration. Such assignments may be before, during or after the emergency/disaster.
• All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the City and its citizens.
