About The Position

The position of firefighter is the entry-level position in the department. Firefighter/EMT’s shall be appointed through a competitive exam process. No person shall be appointed firefighter unless eligible for certification as a Firefighter II and EMT. As a condition of employment, a firefighter is required to become a paramedic as soon as practical. Firefighters are directly responsible to the station officer for participating in company inspections, public education activities, and emergency response operations; possessing thorough knowledge of the operation of the apparatus and equipment to which they are assigned; possessing a thorough knowledge of the streets, hydrants, static water sources, and target hazards in their first due in area; maintaining and caring for all equipment assigned to them, their station, and their apparatus; and performing other such duties as assigned.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
Valid State of Ohio Driver’s license with a good driving record.
State of Ohio Firefighter 2 certificate.
State of Ohio Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certificate (Paramedic preferred).
Fire prevention, suppression, and education methods, practices, and procedures for a variety of fire, hazardous materials response, emergency management systems and rescue operations.
Safe work practices and procedures.
Rules, regulations, and operational procedures of the Fire Department related to modern firefighting and EMS.
Proper utilization and maintenance requirements of fire apparatus, ambulances, equipment, tools, devices, and facilities.
Local geography including the location of hydrants and the major fire hazards of the response area.
Modern office practices, procedures, methods, and equipment.
Ability to apply firefighting and emergency medical services techniques and procedures, as necessary.
Demonstrate mechanical aptitude as required in the operation of firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical services equipment.
Demonstrate a working knowledge of radio operations and communications.
Maintain clear thinking when subject to high stress situations with little or no warning and may be involved for long periods of time.
Perform field calculations for the proper and effective operation of equipment at emergency scenes.
Understand and follow oral and written directions promptly and accurately.
Skill in effective oral and written communication.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Communicate in a positive and respectful manner with the public.
Ability to effectively and safely drive, operate, and maintain the full range of apparatuses and equipment used by the Department.
Ability to perform all job-related physical tasks not limited to but including station duties, emergency operations, and training.
Be punctual and regular in attendance.
Frequently required to sit, talk, hear, stand, walk, use hands and fingers to feel, handle, or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms.
Occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste and smell.
Frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 130 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Correction for vision is permitted as allowed by NFPA 1582.

Responsibilities

Participating in company inspections, public education activities, and emergency response operations.
Possessing thorough knowledge of the operation of the apparatus and equipment to which they are assigned.

Maintaining and caring for all equipment assigned to them, their station, and their apparatus.

Safely respond to alarms in various fire apparatus; Operate apparatus at scenes and perform rescue operations.
Perform fire suppression duties.
Lay hose lines and connect hose lines.
Enter burning buildings.
Assist in operating nozzles and directing water streams.
Carry and operate fire extinguishers.
Raise, climb and lower ladders.
Make forcible entry into buildings when necessary.
Operate and oversee the use of numerous types of vehicles, equipment, tools and apparatus.
Ventilate buildings; assist in salvage and overhaul operations.
Must be capable of grasping, lifting and operating any and all tools and equipment as required to be used in rescue and firefighting operations.
Knowledge of the Incident Command System.
Complete the daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Respond to medical emergencies in a ambulance.
Provide emergency medical care to the acquired certification level.
Must be capable of grasping, lifting, and operating any and all tools and equipment as required to be used in rescue and medical emergencies.
Load patients onto a backboard or stretcher and into a ambulance.
Must be capable of grasping and lifting patients, backboards and stretchers and placing into the ambulance.
Operate the ambulance in a safe manner.
Properly deliver the patient to the receiving hospital.
Place the ambulance and equipment back in service.
Properly complete all EMS forms and documentation in a clear, concise and legible manner.
Maintain the interior and exterior cleanliness of apparatus, equipment, and stations.
Maintain personal health, wellness, physical abilities and encourage these activities in others.
Inspect, test, service and clean firefighting, rescue, emergency medical equipment, apparatus and fire hydrants after calls or as scheduled for daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, annual maintenance.
Relay information to your relief regarding equipment, unusual occurrences, concerns or anything noteworthy during your shift.
Study fire department rules, Standard Operating Policies (SOP) and all documentation pertaining to the job; attend drills, schools, and seminars pertaining to fire suppression, fire prevention, rescue, and emergency medical services as directed.
Stay as current as possible on current methods and techniques pertaining to the profession.
Monitor, maintain and take recertification examinations as required.
Assist in fire prevention education and public education.
Knowledge of and ability to fill out fire and EMS reports completely and in a timely manner.
Complete any forms for any leave type no later than the first day back to work after a absence.
