About The Position

This is full-time firefighting work combating, extinguishing, preventing fires as well as providing emergency medical and emergency rescue services to protect life and property. Work also involves routine maintenance of Fire Department equipment, apparatus, and quarters and driving equipment when specifically assigned. Employees in this position perform hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may require strenuous exertion under such handicaps as fire, heat, smoke, and cramped surroundings. Work is performed under the command of a superior officer. Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion and is based on initiative shown, fulfillment of job responsibilities, and general conduct.

Requirements

  • United States Citizen
  • High School Graduate or equivalent (GED)
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Be at least twenty (20) years of age by the last date for filing applications, although must have attained the age of twenty-one (21) to receive appointment to the position of Firefighter/Paramedic.
  • Be no older than thirty-five (35) years of age at time of appointment, except as otherwise provided by statute.
  • Must have a current State of Illinois Firefighter II or Basic Operations Firefighter certification.
  • Be an EMT/Paramedic licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) at time of appointment.
  • Must have successfully completed the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), and ladder climb certification, within the 12 months prior to being eligible for hire.
  • Successfully complete all components of the testing process.
  • Meet the requirements of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Rules; Municipal Codes, Ordinances, and contracts of the applicable community; and the Laws of the State of Illinois.
  • Ability to learn a variety of firefighting and emergency medical duties, methods, and techniques within a reasonable length of time.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work under extreme conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform limited mechanical work involved in maintaining firefighting and rescue apparatus, equipment, and tools.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to determine proper courses of action.
  • Ability to meet such physical requirements as may be established.
  • Skill in the use of fire tools and apparatus.
  • Possession of a valid Illinois Non-CDL Driver's License with the appropriate classification.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain appropriate firefighting and fire/rescue certifications within specified time periods as the Fire Department requires.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain state certification as an Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (EMT-P) within specified time periods as the Fire Department requires and to maintain such throughout their employment.
  • Ability to pass annual medical exam as determined by the City of Batavia.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls; controls and extinguishes fires, protects life and property.
  • Selects hose nozzle, depending on type of fire, lays fire lines, and directs stream of water or chemicals onto fire; positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper levels of building or to assist individuals from burning structures; creates openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance, using axe, chisel, crowbar, saw, and other power equipment; and may deactivate utility services to prevent explosions or other fire breakouts.
  • Removes persons from danger and administers first aid to injured persons; provides emergency medical basic life support services; coordinates with and supplements regional paramedic services; may assist in transporting patients to hospitals.
  • Pumps water to fire at designated pressures; monitors condition of motors and pumps during operations; makes changes as necessary.
  • Participates in post-fire salvage operations such as removing and covering household articles, mopping floors, and cleaning debris.
  • Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire station buildings and grounds, and fire apparatus, auxiliary equipment, and tools.
  • Participate in a continuing program of training and instruction.
  • Receives training in the operation of fire equipment and apparatus; drives and operates a variety of fire equipment.
  • Participate in pre-fire surveys, fire prevention inspections, fire safety education programs, and similar activities.
  • Promotes fire safety education and maintains responsive community relations.
