About The Position

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is seeking dedicated and highly skilled professionals to join our Regional Emergency Services (RES) team as Firefighter Paramedics (PCP or ACP) or Non-Fire Trained Advanced Care Paramedics. These roles offer the opportunity to serve a diverse, dynamic, high-call volume region as part of a fully integrated Fire and EMS service that provides advanced life support, emergency response and specialized services, including helicopter medical and rescue services within our region. RES operates in a complex and demanding environment where professionalism, adaptability, and teamwork are critical to success. Firefighter Paramedics perform dual roles in fire suppression and EMS, while Non-Fire Trained ACPs focus exclusively on advanced pre-hospital medical care. Both positions are integral to the delivery of high-quality emergency services, while supporting the safety and well-being of our community. These positions are represented by the IAFF Local 2494.

Requirements

  • NFPA 1001 Level I and II is required for Firefighter Paramedic positions.
  • Current Alberta College of Paramedics Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) or Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) Certification is required.
  • Non-Fire Trained Advanced Care Paramedic positions do not require previous fire training. Those hired will have the opportunity to obtain fire training if they choose to become qualified Firefighter ACPs.
  • Valid CPR - Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification.
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Class Four (4) Alberta Driver's Licence with Q Endorsement is required.
  • Clear Criminal Record with Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Class Three (3) Alberta Driver's Licence with Q Endorsement is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Respond safely and effectively to emergency and non-emergency incidents in accordance with RES policies, procedures and operational guidelines.
  • Deliver high-quality patient care and emergency medical services.
  • Follow direction from operations officers during emergency response, and from officers responsible for training, prevention, and operational readiness.
  • Participate in daily shift operations, including apparatus and equipment checks, station duties, documentation and operational readiness activities.
  • Work collaboratively within a team-based environment where trust, accountability, and communication are essential.
  • Support public education initiatives, fire prevention programs, and community engagement activities.
  • Attend and successfully complete training required to maintain certifications and to progress to First Class Firefighter.
  • Complete administrative and reporting duties accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Contribute to the continuity, effectiveness, and professionalism of the Regional Emergency Services Department.
  • Perform other duties as required.
