Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • CT Fire Fighter 1 (FFI) certification
  • CT Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
  • CT Hazardous Materials Operational
  • Must obtain CT Hazardous Materials Technician within one year of start date
  • Valid State of Connecticut "Q" endorsement or a valid Commercial Driver's license (CDL)

Nice To Haves

  • CT Fire Fighter II (FF2) Certification
  • CT Fire Instructor I Certification
  • Hazardous Material Technician certified.
  • CT Confined Space Rescue
  • Fire inspection and knowledge of fire suppression and alarm systems, dispatcher experience.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergencies such as fire, hazmat, and disaster by deploying equipment, assist in organizing and directing others and carry out rescues using a variety of protective gear and specialized equipment.
  • Respond to a wide variety of emergency medical incidents.
  • Provide medical care consistent with Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) training.
  • Supports paramedic on Advance Life Support (ALS) response and will be tasked with ambulance transport.
  • Drive Fire apparatus including pumpers, rescue/hazmat vehicles, ambulance, or service vehicles to transport material, equipment, and personnel to fire, accident, disaster, or other scenes requiring assistance.
  • Implementing initial scene operations, operating pumps, ventilation, conducting confined space rescue, fire attacks, hazardous materials (HAZMAT) incidents and assisting with salvage and overhaul operations.
  • Carry out inspection and testing of a variety of facilities and equipment, tools and fire protection devices, chemicals and support devices.
  • May assist with fire investigation when requested.
  • Test and repair firefighting equipment and perform condition status checks recommending overhaul and refurbishing actions to restore deficient operating parameters.
  • Perform routine servicing and maintenance throughout the facilities for assigned area, equipment and vehicles following specified procedures and check list, clean facilities, vehicles and equipment and paint, observation, training, and related activities.
  • Carry out other tasks not specifically listed, within the scope and skill level of this job description to develop individuals’ skills and support objectives of the unit.
  • May be required to train for, obtain and maintain licenses, certifications and operator permits for specialized assignment and to conform with governmental and company regulations.
  • Physically be able to lift 50 pounds, climb ladders, drag fully charged hose lines, assist in carrying patients and endure extreme physical effort in hazardous conditions while on a Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
