About The Position

The Firefighter EMT position is responsible for protecting life and property through various duties including firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials response, urban rescue, wildland interface, and fire prevention. The role also involves maintaining fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities. This is an entry-level position, with preference given to those with Paramedic certification or lateral transfers.

Requirements

  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid Utah driver's license.
  • Must have refrained from ever using hallucinogenic drugs.
  • Must have refrained from marijuana use in the past two (2) years.
  • Must have refrained from all other illegal drug use (including steroids) in the past five (5) years.
  • Must be a non-smoker and have refrained from use of any tobacco products for the past 12 months.
  • Must have a good driving record free from "at fault" accidents and convictions for violations of criminal traffic infractions to include adjudication withheld for the past 12 months.
  • Must have no driver's license suspension within the past five years.
  • Must not have been convicted or plead nolle contender to any 1st or 2nd degree misdemeanor within the last three years.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Utah or NREMT EMS Certification, EMT required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to learn the operation of fire suppression and other emergency equipment.
  • Ability to learn to apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques.
  • Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort for prolonged periods under extreme conditions.
  • Ability to use common sense, maturity, ethical decision-making ability and commitment.
  • Ability to make split-second decisions in life or death situations.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Ability to climb, maintain body equilibrium, bend, kneel, reach, stand, walk, run, push, pull, lift, grasp, talk and hear.
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and written.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees or residents.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must pass the department's annual Physical Agility Test (PAT).
  • Must be cleared for duty as determined by a physician through required annual or biennial medical screening evaluations.
  • Must be able to move objects between 20-100 pounds short distances.
  • Must perform duties requiring pulling of 40 pounds or more.
  • Must frequently lift objects weighing 50 to 100 lbs.

  • Knowledge of the Department's Rules and Regulations, Standard Operating Procedures, and safety policies, and enforce such policies as needed.
  • Knowledge of the streets, roadways, fire hydrants, water mains, major buildings, and standpipe and sprinkler outlets located within the boundaries of the City of Pleasant Grove and its external service areas.
  • Knowledge of the Standard Fire Prevention Code and the City's ordinances specific to fire prevention.

Responsibilities

  • Engage in fire suppression activities, including rescuing individuals, providing exposure protection, hazard confinement, fire extinguishment, ventilation of hazardous areas, and performing salvage and overhaul techniques.
  • Drive fire apparatus, operate pumps and related equipment, lay hose, and perform fire combat, containment, and extinguishment tasks.
  • Provide basic life support emergency medical services.
  • Participate in fire drills and attend classes on firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
  • Receive and relay fire calls and alarms, and operate radio and other communication equipment.
  • Utilize appropriate safety equipment in hazardous conditions.
  • Participate in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures for fire prevention programs.
  • Perform general maintenance on fire facilities and equipment.
  • Develop plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism through continuous learning and attendance at job improvement courses, seminars, and conferences.
  • Adhere to departmental Rules and Regulations, Standard Operating Procedures, Medical Treatment Guidelines, and Field Operational Guidelines.
  • Maintain physical condition and skills necessary for the role.
  • Present programs to the community on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics.
  • Perform salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
  • Conduct duties with efficiency, including written correspondence, spreadsheet development, database program operation, and computer data entry.
  • Conduct inventories.
  • Carry out duties in compliance with Federal, State, County, and Local Laws and Ordinances.
  • Protect patient information privacy in accordance with policies and Federal Law.
  • Report concerns regarding patient privacy policies and procedures without threat of retaliation.
  • Participate in department privacy training and communicate privacy policy information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
