About The Position

Chesterfield Fire and EMS is seeking Firefighter/EMTs to provide emergency services in a professional department that responds to approximately 43,000 calls annually, about 80% of which are EMS-related. The role involves a physically and mentally demanding 26-week recruit school, followed by emergency response work serving a diverse community. Employees are expected to demonstrate teamwork, strong communication, dedication, compassion, honesty, courage, accountability, professionalism, integrity, safety, and customer service. The position is part of an approved Career Development Plan with six firefighter steps—Firefighter I through Firefighter VI—and salary incentives for progression. The schedule is 40 hours per week during recruit school, approximately 26 weeks, and then 24 hours on/48 hours off; schedules may vary based on assignment. The position is safety-sensitive and subject to random drug and alcohol testing. Work may occur in high-security areas governed by the U.S. Department of Justice CJIS Security Policy, requiring a stringent criminal background check.

Requirements

  • At the time of application, be eligible to work in the United States and possess a valid driver’s license and good driving record; the posting specifies a negative 1 or better driving point balance requirement.
  • At the time of testing, have a high school diploma or GED and be at least 18 years old.
  • Pass a written examination and physical ability test.
  • Pass an extensive background investigation, including employment verifications, an FBI criminal background check, and education/degree verification.
  • Be in good health as determined by a physician following a pre-employment medical examination, with 20/20 vision or vision corrected to 20/25.
  • Obtain and submit out-of-state driving records with the background packet at testing; records must cover at least three years and be dated within 30 days of testing.
  • Complete pre-employment drug testing; the safety-sensitive position is also subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Pass the more stringent criminal background check required for work in CJIS-governed high-security areas.
  • Meet the stated driving-record eligibility standards: the record must not reflect six or more demerit points in the 24 months before the anticipated hire date, one major six-point violation in the preceding 36 months, or a DMV point balance less than negative one. Certain convictions or assignments within the past five years—including DUI, felony, specified alcohol safety or rehabilitation programs, hit and run, or operating with a suspended or revoked license—make applicants ineligible.
  • Be able to operate firefighting and associated tools and equipment and apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques.
  • Be able to perform strenuous or peak physical effort for prolonged periods during emergencies, training, or station maintenance, including in extreme heights, heat, cold, or smoke.
  • Be able to perform physically demanding tasks including heavy lifting, stair climbing, prolonged standing, squatting, stooping, bending, twisting, stretching, crawling, overhead reaching, and working in awkward positions.
  • Be able to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations, follow verbal and written instructions, communicate effectively orally and in writing, and develop effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Have close, distance, peripheral, and depth-perception vision and the ability to adjust focus.
