About The Position

Wylie Fire Rescue is seeking motivated individuals to join their ISO ranked team. The selected individuals will perform a variety of highly technical and specialized tasks involving and/or related to emergency medical services, rescues, hazardous materials incidents, administration, and other assignments as required. When assigned as Firefighter, performs additional tasks related to fire suppression and fire prevention. Supervision is provided by a Fire Captain, and in some cases, a chief officer. Paramedic Certification Pay is an additional $2,750.00 per year. Shifts are 48/96. It is possible that some visible tattoos might require a long sleeved uniform shirt to be worn while on duty. Neck, face or hand tattoos, are prohibited per policy. No exceptions.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED certificate.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Valid Class C Driver's License, with clear driving record.
Must have Texas Driver's License within 30 days of hire.
Must possess a valid Texas Class B Exempt Driver’s License within six months of employment.
Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses as outlined by Emergency Management.
Certification as an EMT-Basic or Paramedic through the Texas Department of State Health Services.
Full-time employees must be certified by the Texas Department of State Health Services as a paramedic.
Employees hired as an EMT will be required to attend and successfully complete a paramedic-training program, pass the National Registry Paramedic certification exam, maintain Paramedic certification with the Texas Department of State Health Services, and remain authorized to function as a paramedic by the Medical Director.
An employee will be given six (6) months and/or three (3) attempts to pass the National Registry Paramedic certification exam upon successful completion of paramedic school.
If the employee currently possesses a paramedic certification, he/she will be eligible to receive paramedic certification pay.
Certification as a Basic Structural Firefighter through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.

Responsibilities

Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
Administers emergency medical services to ill/injured persons consistent with the level authorized by the Texas Department of State Health Services certification, established medical protocols, and standard operating procedures.
Follows established universal health precautions in the treatment and care of patients.
Works indoors and outdoors, subject to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, hazardous conditions, and intermittent exposure to dust, fumes, and loud noise intensity.
Maintains good standing with Medical Director.
Passes all required tests administered by the Medical Director or his/her agents including annual protocol tests and card course assessments.
Participates in physical fitness training per department policy.
Conducts public education activities that may include citizens’ fire academy, birthday parties, block parties, station tours, etc.
Assists in the development and presentation of training related to EMS and special operations.
Learns streets and routes within the city and surrounding areas to include the location of medical facilities to ensure quick response times.
Attends scheduled training necessary to maintain EMS certification and all other required certifications.
Participates in the testing, cleaning, and maintenance of facilities, grounds, equipment, apparatus, and hydrants to ensure proper care and maintenance.
Participates in and conducts pre-incident planning of high occupancy and commercial businesses to identify possible fire and life safety hazards.
May be required to work shift and non-shift schedules including weekends, holidays, on-call, and extended hours in emergency, disaster, or other situations influenced by heavy workloads or staffing difficulties.
Completes all routine paperwork and reports in a timely manner as required.
Studies technical materials on equipment operation to improve or maintain an effective level of performance.
Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours.
Responds to requests and inquiries from the public, other department personnel, and other City departments.
Operates a motor vehicle in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
Orientation period is a full 12 months from date of hire.
Performs as a responsible steward of the public trust and strives for excellence in public service, enhancing the quality of life for all.
Acts in a civil, respectful manner at all times to management, co-workers, and others.
Performs other duties as may be assigned.
Performs fire suppression functions including rescue, deploying and operating hose, ventilating roofs, performing salvage work during and after fires, and other related tasks associated with fire suppression.
Assists in the development and presentation of training related to fire.
Attends scheduled training necessary to maintain fire certification.
Studies technical materials on fire suppression and fire prevention to improve or maintain an effective level of performance.
May be assigned to a step-up of two ranks above current position or any acting assignment as deemed necessary by the Fire Chief. When assigned to a step-up or acting position, performs all duties and responsibilities of the role assigned.
