About The Position

Under the general supervision of the station Fire Captain, this role provides direct services, individually and as a member of a team, in response to emergency calls and planned events to protect life, property, and the environment. The position participates in fire prevention, community education, community wellness, training, equipment, and facility maintenance activities. A Paramedic/Firefighter will specifically respond to medical emergencies and provide pre-hospital Advanced Life Support care. The Paramedic/Firefighter is the highest medical authority at an emergency medical scene, making medical decisions based on protocols and medical direction.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • One year of full-time broad municipal fire service work as a Firefighter EMT or Firefighter Paramedic (for EMT I/Paramedic I).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of full-time broad municipal fire service work as a Firefighter EMT or Firefighter Paramedic (for EMT II/Paramedic II).
  • Firefighter I & II Certifications – IFSAC or ProBoard
  • Hazmat Awareness and Operations Certifications – IFSAC or ProBoard
  • ICS 100, 200, 700, 800
  • Valid Utah Driver License
  • Certification and licensure as an EMT or Paramedic by the State of Utah Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (Reciprocity completed as a condition of employment for out-of-state)
  • Maintain state-mandated continuing education requirements, including current American Heart Association (AHA) certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or equivalent.
  • Possess or obtain Red Card Certification within one year of hire.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations course within one year of hire.
  • Current training record for Fire and EMS.
  • Knowledge of firefighting practices and procedures, fire hazards, safety precautions, fire hydraulics, building construction, and mechanics.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials awareness and basic operations.
  • Knowledge of city geography, and department policy, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of job-related computers and software applications (Word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, e-mail/scheduler, and other personal computer applications).
  • Skilled with understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions.
  • Skilled with preparing written reports using proper grammar and spelling.
  • Skilled with maintaining effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work at considerable heights, in confined spaces or sight-obscured environments, and perform limited mechanical work.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine the proper course of action under stressful and emergency conditions.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements established by the department.
  • Pass a doctor’s medical examination.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of a nationally accredited Critical Care Paramedic (CCP-C) or Flight Paramedic Course (FP-C) with documentation (Paramedic II only).
  • Company Officer Inspector (Paramedic II only).

Responsibilities

  • Responds to and assists with a wide variety of calls for service including fires, rescue situations, hazardous materials incidents, medical emergencies, floods, natural and manmade disasters, elderly assists, police assists, and motorist assists.
  • Responds to emergency medical incidents; triages patients and determines appropriate medical care.
  • Provides basic and advanced life support, and transports the sick and injured to definitive care.
  • Functions within department EMS protocols and department SOGs.
  • Identifies and implements appropriate tactics to evacuate occupants, rescue victims, protect exposures, perform fire control and extinguishment, forcible entry, ventilation, salvage and overhaul activities.
  • Raises and climbs ladders; connects and extends and operates hose lines and performs other related duties as needed to protect life, property and the environment at fire, hazardous materials, and rescue related incidents.
  • Conducts daily inspection of condition and readiness of division apparatus and equipment; performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance of apparatus and equipment.
  • Cleans, washes and maintains apparatus and equipment; maintains the fire station and grounds.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies; and participates in periodic testing of ladders, fire hose, SCBA, pumps, and other apparatus and equipment.
  • Inventories medical equipment and medications daily to ensure proper control and inventory.
  • Performs a variety of administrative duties, including preparing timely and accurate patient care reports.
  • Participates in city and department training.
  • Conducts departmental training sessions on job-related topics.
  • Performs as a driver of ambulances and/or as a driver/operator of fire apparatus or any other city-owned vehicle.
  • Conducts life safety inspections of commercial, residential, public assemblies, and governmental buildings to ensure compliance with applicable life safety regulations, ordinances, and standards.
  • Provides community education and event support, including station tours and education classes.
  • Assists in other department administrative activities as assigned.
  • Performs a variety of administrative duties, including preparing reports and forms, conducting research, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Must satisfy the medical requirements of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 1582 and at all times maintain a fitness level that meets or exceeds the minimum standard of the department's physical ability test.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
