About The Position

You will serve as a FIREFIGHTER (BLS/HAZMAT TECHNICIAN) in the NAVY FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES DEPARTMENT of OLF SAN NIC.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.

  • Generally, current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level. This requirement is called time-in-grade. Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • This position has a maximum entry age of 37. Candidates that will be older than 37 at the time of appointment will require an age waiver.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals).
  • You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This position requires exposure to high noise levels.
  • For the GS-06 position: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
  • For the GS-07 position: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
  • A negative drug test result must be received by HR within 30 calendar days after the EOD (i.e., start date).
  • The selectee's inability to successfully pass; or refusal to conduct the test may result in: 1) the tentative or final job offer being withdrawn during the recruitment process; or 2) subsequently being removed from Federal service for failure to meet a condition of employment.
  • You may be required to sign a "Drug Test Statement of Understanding" if you are selected for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automatic external defibrillation (AED) for a patient.
  • Collect initial hazardous materials response information from hazardous materials safety data sheets, United Nations/North American (UN/NA) identification numbers, or placards.
  • Inspect fire extinguishers to verify they are fully operational and meet all regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze the structural condition of a building to determine firefighting equipment and apparatus required to fight fire.
  • Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department/brigade.
  • Detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards.
  • Controlling hazardous materials incidents.
  • Performing basic and routine medical procedures.
  • Performing rescue operations.
  • Identifying active and potential fire hazards and providing structural firefighting IAW the Job Performance Requirements of the current edition of NFPA 1001.
  • Employing hazard and risk assessment techniques to complete incident analysis and effectively mitigate hazardous materials emergencies at the Operations level.
  • Providing emergency medical care at the BLS level to the full range of medical and trauma patients including managing respiratory and cardiac emergencies to include performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), bag-valve-mask resuscitation, and automatic external defibrillation (AED).
  • Performing driver/operator level maintenance and inspections and operating a variety of complex firefighting equipment including pumpers and/or aerial vehicles.
  • Completing a variety of record keeping tasks using paper and computer based systems including patient care reports, equipment testing and maintenance records, NFIRS reports, vehicle and equipment inspection forms, pre-fire plans, etc.
