About The Position

This position provides classroom instruction to students enrolled in the Economic & Workforce Development (Continuing Education) Fire Sprinkler and Fire Alarm classes. The instructor will follow college policies and procedures, prepare course syllabi, lesson plans, and schedules, and maintain an online classroom. Responsibilities include developing supplemental materials, participating in curriculum development, and maintaining accurate student records. The instructor must stay current with industry standards and may be required to revise and improve lesson formats.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of fire sprinkler system installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair practices.
  • Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards applicable to fire sprinkler systems, particularly NFPA 13.
  • Knowledge of applicable building and fire codes, regulations, and industry standards related to automatic fire sprinkler systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, specifications, and fire sprinkler system plans.
  • Ability to communicate concisely and respectfully, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading and writing, and operating assigned equipment.
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities that may include sitting and standing for extended periods of time and operating assigned equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain mental capacity that allows the capability of making sound decisions, answering questions, and demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
  • Ability to establish and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of fire sprinkler systems and applicable NFPA standards.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts and demonstrate hands-on fire sprinkler installation and service skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret fire sprinkler plans, construction drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Willingness to learn online teaching techniques and systems. Training provided by CFCC.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in fire sprinkler installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, design, or a closely related fire protection field.

Nice To Haves

  • Five (5) or more years of professional experience in the fire sprinkler or fire protection industry.
  • Current or previous experience as a fire sprinkler fitter, technician, foreman, superintendent, inspector, designer, or other fire protection professional.
  • NICET certification in Water-Based Systems Layout and/or Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Systems.
  • Completion of a recognized fire sprinkler apprenticeship or journey-level training program.
  • OSHA-10, OSHA-30, or equivalent construction safety training.
  • A minimum of 1 year of teaching experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom instruction to students.
  • Prepare course syllabus in accordance with the NC Combined Course Library, lesson plans and schedule classroom activities.
  • Modify as needed.
  • Maintain an online classroom. Training will be provided.
  • Develop supplemental materials and/or visual aides to enhance textbook learning.
  • Participate in curriculum development, evaluation and changes as needed
  • Maintain accurate student attendance records, and performance.
  • Maintain other records and/or databases in accordance with program and accreditation requirements.
  • Remain current through the certifying organizations of the trade pertaining to the classes taught.
  • Make necessary changes as needed.
  • Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lessons format.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
