The Fire Safety Technician (Firefighter/EMT) influences life-safety conditions in a fast-paced shipyard manufacturing environment and responds to emergencies throughout Electric Boat. The EB Fire Department is an all-hazards organization responding to fires in office buildings, motor vehicles, industrial and production buildings, and sections of submarines under construction. Responses also include hazardous-material incidents, confined-space and high-angle rope rescues, motor vehicle accidents, entrapments, and requests for emergency medical services. Fire Safety Technicians must be able to wear full firefighter turnout gear and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) during emergency response and incident mitigation. When not responding to emergencies, the technician performs daily vehicle checks, inventories specialized rescue gear and equipment, and drives and operates fire engines, rescue vehicles, special-hazards apparatus, and ambulances. The position supports shipbuilders by certifying hazardous and non-hazardous atmospheres for work in confined spaces. It also involves fire-safety inspections of Electric Boat-owned and leased buildings and submarine units, issuing hot-work permits and providing surveillance during hot work, and enforcing applicable NFPA, OSHA, Rhode Island State Fire Code, Electric Boat, and U.S. Navy requirements. Additional duties include hazmat locker and fire department connection inspections; AED maintenance and inspection; combustible gas meter maintenance and bump testing; annual fire hydrant flow testing; dry- and wet-pipe sprinkler system testing; monthly fire alarm and fire pump system testing; fire extinguisher checks; and annual fire hose testing. Fire Safety Technicians work closely with area fire departments during emergencies and with maintenance personnel to help maintain a safe and productive manufacturing facility. They must maintain Firefighter, Specialized Rescue, EMS, and Hazmat certifications through company-provided refresher training. The position is located at the Quonset Point facility in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.
